Arroyo Hondo is a northwestward-flowing U.S. Geological Survey. The area is privately owned by the San Francisco Water Department and is closed to public access because of its usage as drinking water. Bounded to the east by Oak Ridge and to the west by Poverty Ridge, Arroyo Hondo empties into the Calaveras Reservoir where it joins Calaveras Creek. It is formed by the confluence of Smith Creek and Isabel Creek which drain the west and east slopes of Mount Hamilton, respectively. History Arroyo Hondo means "deep creek" in Spanish. Its Isabel Creek tributary is significant in that the Spanish name for Mt. Arroyo Hondo is a census-designated place in Taos County near Taos, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 474. It is historically notable as the site of the killing of six to eight employees by a force of allied Native Americans at Simon Turley's mill and distillery trading post on January 20, 1847. This took place during the Taos Revolt, a populist insurrection of New Mexicans and Native Americans against the new United States territorial regime during the Mexican–American War. Arroyo Hondo Pueblo
Arroyo Hondo Pueblo was a pueblo in the upper Rio Grande valley, New Mexico. First occupied in the 13th century, the complex grew rapidly, and at its peak in the 14th century contained up to a thousand rooms; it has been called a "pueblo boomtown". However, it was short-lived, and the site was abandoned by about 1425. The pueblo has been the subject of a major archaeological research project since the 1970s, directed by Douglas W. Schwartz. It was listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Location and environment Arroyo Hondo Pueblo is situated atop the Arroyo Hondo gorge, a tributary of the Santa Fe River, about 8 km southeast of the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hondo Creek
Hondo Creek is a tributary of the Frio River in Texas that rises in Bandera County northwest of Tarpley and runs approximately 67 miles to its mouth near Pearsall, Texas. The creek crosses through three counties including Bandera, Medina, and Frio. Course Hondo (''Spanish for deep'') Creek begins in the Texas Hill Country. The initially broken waters of the stream travels through limestone benches and steep slopes until the land flattens near Tarpley. This section of the creek is generally shallow with a bottom of clay loam, which serves as a habitat for Ashe juniper and live oak woods. As it runs south, the creek grows in depth in the surrounding rolling plain, and a mixture of clay with a large concentration of sand is found in its bed. As the tributary approaches its mouth, the environment changes to fertile crop lands with Mesquite trees growing along its bank.
