or ''Carolomacérienne'' , image flag=Flag of Charleville Mezieres.svg Charleville-Mézières () is a commune of northern France, capital of the Ardennes department, Grand Est. Charleville-Mézières is located on the banks of the river Meuse. History Charleville and Mézières were originally separate communities on opposite banks of the Meuse, about from one another. Charleville was founded by Charles Gonzaga, the 8th duke of Mantua, in 1606. Its inhabitants were known as Carolopolitans (' or ''Carolopolitaines''). It was prosperous from the 17th century, although its fortifications were dismantled under LouisXIV in 1687 and it passed into French hands in 1708. It was plundered by the Prussians in 1815. France's royal armaments factory was formerly located there and gave its name to the Charleville musket, before being relocated and divided between Tulle and Châtellerault. Auvillers-les-Forges
Auvillers-les-Forges is a commune in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region of northern France. Geography Auvillers-les-Forges is located some 27 km west by north-west of Charleville-Mézières and 22 km east by south-east of Hirson. Access to the commune is by the European route E44 from Maubert-Fontaine in the east which passes through the north of the commune intersecting the D877 in the commune and continuing to Hirson in the west. Access to the village is by the D877 from Éteignières in the north which passes through the length of the commune and the village and continues south to Champlin. The D20 goes south-east from the village to Girondelle. Apart from the village there is the hamlet of Le Chateau-Vert north-east of the village. There is a large forest in the north of the commune (the ''Bois d'Auviller-les-Forges'') but the rest of the commune is farmland. Bogny-sur-Meuse is known for multiple sites linked to the medieval legend of The Four Sons of Aymon, such as the Hermitage, the statue of Bayard the horse, and the four peaks symbolizing the four brothers. Situated in the Ardennes mountains, the commune extends along the banks of the Meuse. History upleft, Statue of Bayard the horse Bogny-sur-Meuse came into existence when the villages of Château-Regnault-Bogny, Braux and Levrézy merged in 1967.
