Arrested Development is an American hip hop musical ensemble, group that formed in Atlanta in 1988. It was founded by Speech (rapper), Speech and Headliner (DJ), Headliner as a positive, Afrocentrism, Afrocentric alternative to the gangsta rap popular in the late 1980s. Baba Oje and frontman Speech (rapper), Speech met at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee when they were both students. Baba Oje was 57 years old at the time. Pazz & Jop was an annual poll of top musical releases, compiled by American newspaper ''The Village Voice'' and created by music critic Robert Christgau. It published lists of the year's top releases for 1971 and, after Christgau's two-year absence from the ''Voice'', each year from 1974 onward. The polls are tabulated from the submitted year-end top 10 lists of hundreds of music critics. It was named in acknowledgement of the defunct magazine ''Jazz & Pop'', and adopted the ratings system used in that publication's annual critics poll. The Pazz & Jop was introduced by ''The Village Voice'' in 1971 as an album-only poll; it was expanded to include votes for singles in 1979. "Revolution" is a song by American hip hop group Arrested Development, from the soundtrack to the 1992 film ''Malcolm X''. Background Speech has expressed gratitude for the film's depiction of a "side" of Malcolm X which shares the perspective of Arrested Development. Spike Lee, the director of the film, had asked Speech to write a song for it. Speech considered it a personal responsibility to "acknowledge that there is a need for struggle, because of all the bad things going on in the nation", which is reflected in the line "Am I doing as much as I can for the struggle?" Malcolm X
Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam until 1964, he was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the Black community. A posthumous autobiography, on which he collaborated with Alex Haley, was published in 1965.
