Army Training School
The Army Training School (ATS) () is a unit of the Sri Lanka Army responsible for recruit training and unit training for infantry battalion. It is based in Maduruoya it was established in 1985 at the Panagoda Cantonment by the Sri Lanka Light Infantry as the ''Recruit Training School'' under the command of Major A. K. Jayawardana SLLI. In late 1984 the unit took over premises built for the '' Maduruoya Irrigation Project'', and from 1986 began unit training of infantry battalions on both on site and at other locations. History The ATS went through its embryonic stages at 1 Sri lanka Light Infantry premises before been moved to the present environs. Infrastructure facilities were available at Maduruoya in the complex built by the Canadian company FAFJ; which was a venture set up to construct the Maduru Oya dam. Panagoda Cantonment is a cantonment located in the western Western Province, Sri Lanka, Western Province of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) is the oldest regiment in the Sri Lanka Army and the oldest infantry regiment in the army. It is made up of ten regular battalions and five volunteer battalions, and is headquartered at the Panagoda Cantonment, Panagoda. Over the years it has become the most distinguished and dependable regiment in the army. History The regiment's origins can be traced back to the formation of the Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers (CLIV) force which was formed on 1 April 1881 by a proclamation issued by the Governor of Ceylon as a reserve unit in Ceylon. The first commanding officer of the force was Lieutenant Colonel John Scott Armitage and the Colonel of the Regiment was Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales. The regiment's current Regimental March ''I am Ninety Five'' and the Regimental Bugle Call were adopted soon after this. Major (Sri Lanka)
Major is a rank in the Sri Lanka Army. The rank insignia for a major is the Sri Lankan emblem. It ranks below lieutenant colonel and above captain. The equivalent is Lieutenant-Commander in the Sri Lanka Navy and Squadron Leader in the Sri Lanka Air Force. From 1949 to 1972, in the Ceylon Army the rank insignia for a major was a crown, similar to the of the British Army Major. A major of the Sri Lanka Army would usually commanding independent companies, squadrons and batteries, but those that were organically part of a regiment or battalion were still usually commanded by captains.
