Armand Sylvestre (Quebec MLA)
Armand Sylvestre (October 16, 1910 – November 4, 1980) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Quebec. He represented Berthier in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1944 to 1948 as a Liberal. Born in Saint-Cuthbert, Quebec, the son of Camille Sylvestre and Marie-Louise Paquette, Sylvestre was educated in Saint-Cuthbert, at the Séminaire de Joliette, the Collège de Berthierville and the Université de Montréal. He was called to the Quebec bar in 1937 and set up practice in Berthierville. Sylvestre was solicitor for the Liquor Commission in Joliette district from 1939 to 1944 and managing director of the ''Courrier de Berthier'' from 1945 to 1948. In 1941, he married Mariette Daviault. He was elected in the 1944 Quebec general election, but was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1948, and again in 1952. Berthier (provincial Electoral District)
Berthier is a provincial electoral district in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the municipalities of Lavaltrie, Saint-Félix-de-Valois, Lanoraie, Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Berthierville, Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Saint-Gabriel and Saint-Gabriel-de-Brandon. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. 1944 Quebec General Election
The 1944 Quebec general election was held on August 8, 1944 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The '' Union Nationale'', led by former premier Maurice Duplessis, defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Adélard Godbout. This was the first Quebec provincial election in which women were allowed to vote, having been granted suffrage at the provincial level in 1940 and at the federal level in 1919. This election marked Duplessis's comeback after having defeated Godbout in the 1936 election and having lost to him in the 1939 election. Unlike in the 1939 election, when the alcoholic Duplessis was clearly drunk at numerous campaign rallies, ''le chef'' had benefited from the time he had spent in an American sanatorium in 1942-43, where he had sobered up, and in the 1944 election, Duplessis refrained from drinking. The 1948 Quebec general election was held on July 28, 1948, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent '' Union Nationale'', led by Maurice Duplessis, won re-election, defeating the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Adélard Godbout. This was the third time (and the second in a row) that Duplessis led his party to a general election victory. It was Godbout's third (and final) loss to Duplessis in a general election, and the second in a row. He had won one victory against Duplessis years earlier in the 1939 election. In this election, the Liberals fared particularly poorly, reduced to only 8 seats, although their share of the popular vote was around 36%. Saint-Thomas, Quebec
Saint-Thomas is a town in Joliette Regional County Municipality in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada. Prior to January 22, 1992, it was in D'Autray Regional County Municipality. History Starting in 1790, the first few settler families arrived from the La Noraye Seignory and settled in the North and South concessions of the area, then called North Jersey. The origin of this name is not known but may be a phonetic deformation of Chertsey, the name of a neighboring district. In the 1830s, the parish of Sainte-Élisabeth became overcrowded and many of its inhabitants moved to North Jersey, forming a new village called Saint-Thomas-de-North-Jersey from 1838 onwards. That same year, the Parish of Saint-Thomas was formed on November 15. It was named in honour of Thomas-Léandre Brassard (1805-1891), pastor of Sainte-Élisabeth-de-Joliette at that time.
