Arianna In Nasso (Porpora)
''Arianna in Nasso'' is a 1733 opera by Nicola Porpora to a libretto by Paolo Rolli, chief conductor of the Opera of the Nobility. Background The choice of the subject of Ariadne was a challenge to Handel, whose '' Arianna in Creta'' was completed by 5 October 1733. Handel's ''Arianna in Creta'' was based on Pietro Pariati's much-set ''Arianna e Teseo'', in the later of two versions by Leonardo Leo (1729). This was a libretto which Porpora himself had also used for his own ''Arianna e Teseo'' (1721). Handel's choice of libretto obliged Porpora to turn to Rolli's libretto which was modeled not on Pariati but on Stampa's libretto to Giovanni Porta Giovanni Porta (c. 1677 – 21 June 1755) was an Italian opera composer. Nicola Antonio Porpora
Nicola (or Niccolò) Antonio Porpora (17 August 16863 March 1768) was an Italian composer and teacher of singing of the Baroque era, whose most famous singing students were the castrati Farinelli and Caffarelli. Other students included composers Matteo Capranica and Joseph Haydn. Biography Porpora was born in Naples. He graduated from the music conservatory Poveri di Gesù Cristo of his native city, where the civic opera scene was dominated by Alessandro Scarlatti. Porpora's first opera, ''Agrippina,'' was successfully performed at the Neapolitan court in 1708. His second, ''Berenice'', was performed at Rome. Iain Alexander Fenlon (born 26 October 1949 in Prestbury, Cheshire) is a British musicologist who specializes in music from 1450–1650; particularly Renaissance and early Baroque music from Italy. Colin Timms
Colin Ronald Timms is a musicologist and retired academic. He was Peyton and Barber Professor of Music at the University of Birmingham from 1992 until 2012, when he retired. After graduating from the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he completed Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at King's College London, the latter in 1977 for his thesis on the chamber duets of Agostino Steffani. He was a lecturer at Queen's University Belfast from 1970 to 1972, and the University of Birmingham from 1973. Nigel Cameron Fortune (5 December 1924 – 10 April 2009) was an English musicologist and political activist. Along with Thurston Dart, Oliver Neighbour and Stanley Sadie he was one of Britain's leading musicologists of the post-World War II generation. He played an instrumental part in improving professional musicological standards in England through research initiatives, conferences and scholarly publications. Leonardo Leo
Leonardo Leo (5 August 1694 – 31 October 1744), more correctly Leonardo Ortensio Salvatore de Leo, was a Baroque composer. Biography Leo was born in San Vito degli Schiavoni (currently known as San Vito dei Normanni, province of Brindisi) in the Apulia region, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. He became a student at the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini at Naples in 1703, and was a pupil first of Francesco Provenzale and later of Nicola Fago. It has been supposed that he was a pupil of Pitoni and Alessandro Scarlatti, but he could not possibly have studied with either of these composers, although he was undoubtedly influenced by their compositions.
