''Ariane, jeune fille russe'' (''Ariane, young Russian girl'') is a 1920 novel by the French tennis player and writer Jean Schopfer, published under the pseudonym Claude Anet. It follows a young Russian woman who encounters a Don Juan and falls in love with him. Adaptations The novel has been adapted into film several times. In 1931 the German film ''Ariane'' was made, with an English-language version ''The Loves of Ariane'' and a French '' Ariane, jeune fille russe''. All three were directed by Paul Czinner, and two starred Elisabeth Bergner. In 1957 Billy Wilder adapted the novel for his American film '' Love in the Afternoon''. Jean Schopfer
Jean Schopfer (28 May 1868 – 9 January 1931) was a tennis player competing for France, and a writer, known under the pseudonym of Claude Anet. He reached two singles finals at the Amateur French Championships, winning in 1892 over British player Fassitt, and losing in 1893 to Laurent Riboulet. Biography Schopfer was born 28 May 1868, Morges, Switzerland. Educated at the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre, Schopfer started writing in 1899. Under the name Claude Anet, Schopfer published many books, including ''La Révolution Russe'', written after a trip to Russia during World War I, ''Mayerling'', based on the Mayerling Incident, and ''Simon Kra'', a biography of tennis player Suzanne Lenglen. Paul Czinner
Paul Czinner (30 May 1890 – 22 June 1972) was a Hungarian-born British writer, film director, and producer. Biography Czinner was born to a Jewish family in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. After studying literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna, he worked as a journalist. From 1919 onward, he dedicated himself to work for the film industry as writer, director and producer. Czinner became engaged to actress Gilda Langer in early 1920. Shortly after their engagement Langer succumbed to the Spanish flu and died on 31 January 1920. In 1924, he offered the leading role in his film ''Nju'' to Elisabeth Bergner. They became partners. Due to the persecution of Jews by the Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler, the two, both Jewish, fled to Vienna and then London, where they were married. Elisabeth Bergner (22 August 1897 – 12 May 1986) was an Austrian-British actress. Primarily a stage actress, her career flourished in Berlin and Paris before she moved to London to work in films. Her signature role was Gemma Jones in '' Escape Me Never'', a play written for her by Margaret Kennedy. She played Gemma first in London and then in the Broadway debut, and in a film version for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
