Argas Brumpti
Argas brumpti is a species of soft tick found in eastern and southern Africa. They can live for eight years without food and have the longest lifespan among ticks. The females are 20 millimeters long. Louis Georges Neumann
Louis Georges Neumann (22 October 1846 – 28 June 1930) was a French veterinary parasitologist who specialized in ticks. He was a professor at the Veterinary School in Toulouse. Neumann was born in Paris and was orphaned at a young age. He studied veterinary medicine at the Maisons-Alfort National Veterinary School in 1868 and joined the French army working at the cavalry school in Saumur. He became a lecturer at the École nationale vétérinaire de Toulouse in 1878 and a professor two years later. He worked on helminth parasites initially but soon started examining the arthropods starting with some interest in the mallophaga but he gave the greatest attention to the ticks and became a leading expert on them. He published numerous descriptions of new species and received collections from around the world. The Argasidae are the family of soft ticks, one of the three families of ticks. The family contains 193 species, although the composition of the genera is less certain, and more study is needed before the genera can become stable. The currently accepted genera are ''Antricola'', ''Argas'', ''Nothoaspis'', ''Ornithodoros'', and ''Otobius''. The Argasidae are very common in South Asia, along with 96 other species of ticks, making South Asia the region with the highest biodiversity of ticks worldwide. Soft ticks are resistant to desiccation and can live for several years in arid conditions. Physical characteristics Soft ticks lack the hard scutum present in the hard ticks (Ixodidae). The gnathosoma (or capitulum, the mouthparts-bearing structure) is located on the underside of the animal's body and is not readily visible, while in the Ixodidae, the gnathosoma projects forward from the body.
