Its collection falls under the main categories of opera, theatre, classical and contemporary music, classical and contemporary dance, as well as educational imagery covering all categories. It manages a library of 10 million images with over 900,000 currently viewable online. The library also holds thousands of unscanned prints, negatives and transparencies. These are digitised as part of its on-site archival scanning project. In 2007, it was declared the best international image library in the world. Clive Barda
Clive Blackmore Barda OBE, FRSA (born 14 January 1945) is a London-based, British freelance photographer best known for capturing the performances of classical musicians and artists of the stage (opera, ballet and theatre). During his career spanning over five decades, Barda has created a collection of over a million photographs of performers, composers, and conductors. Early life Barda was born in 1945 and spent his early childhood in Alexandria, Egypt, where his father was a lawyer and his mother a painter. Mark Ellidge
Mark Ellidge (1940 – 9 January 2010) was a British press photographer. Ellidge worked as a photographer for The Sunday Times for nearly 40 years, starting 1 June 1971. He specialised in the performing arts, but also did portrait photography of individuals in the news. He married three times, lastly to Marinka. He had two daughters, Annaliese and Saffron. Ellidge was half-brother to musician Robert Wyatt and played some piano on his 1970 solo album ''The End of an Ear''. Alan Bergman (dancer)
Alan Bergman (1943 – September 24, 2010) was an American ballet dancer, photographer and businessman. He was the product of two generations of Russian/Polish Yiddish actors: Glicka and Morris Balavsky, co-founders of Nordska Films, the Actors Studio and his mother, Miriam, a child star in the Yiddish theater. Dance career At age 8 years Alan Bergman was spotted by Andre Eglevsky, who took Bergman on as his protégé and taught him privately for two years. When Bergman was 10 years old Eglevsky took him to George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet where he was offered a full scholarship. Bergman’s teacher’s were Anatole Oboukoff, Pierre Vladimirov, (the partner of Anna Pavlova and contemporary of Vaslav Nijinsky), and Felia Doubrovska. Simon Annand
Simon Annand is a British, London-based photographer and the author of 'The Half – Photographs of actors preparing for the stage'. The book features images of recognized actors in their dressing rooms over 25 years of British Theatre. and was published by Faber and Faber. It has been exhibited at The National Theatre, the V&A Museum, Arles, South Africa and Scarborough. Annand is also a theatre production photographer. He began his career working at London's Old Vic Theatre under Jonathan Miller (1987–1989). He has since provided images for London's productions of '' War Horse'' and '' Jerusalem''. Bertram Park
Bertram Charles Percival Park (1883–1972) was an English portrait photographer whose work included British and European royalty. Engravings of his photographs were widely used on British and British Commonwealth postage stamps, currency, and other official documents in the 1930s. His theatrical portraits were the source for two paintings by Walter Sickert. With his wife Yvonne Gregory, they produced a number of photographic books of the female nude. He was an expert in the cultivation of the rose and the editor of '' The Rose Annual''. Edwin Otho Sachs FRSE FRGS (5 April 1870 – 9 September 1919) was a British architect and engineer of German descent, who, by his interest in theatre and working as a stagehand and fireman, specialized in the prevention of theatre fires. Furthermore, he was the technical advisor to the London Royal Opera House from 1898 until his death in 1919. Today he is probably most known as co-author of the three-volume book set ''Modern Opera Houses and Theatres''. Life He was born in London the son of G. Sachs, a German. Richard Southern (October 5, 1903 – August 1, 1989) was a British theatre designer and lecturer, best known for his extensive pictorial documentation of historical theatre construction, the Richard Southern Print Collection, comprising some 22,500 visual images. A prolific stage designer and theatre restorer, Southern devoted decades to researching and documenting theatre construction. Career Southern was educated at St Dunstan's College, London, then at Goldsmiths Art School and the Royal Academy of Art, where he trained as a designer. Starting out in acting and stage managing, he designed sets for some fifty productions, staged at the Everyman Theatre, the Cambridge Festival Theatre, and London venues. Mander And Mitchenson
Raymond Mander (15 July 1911 – 27 December 1983) and Joe Mitchenson (4 October 1911 – 7 October 1992) were theatre historians and joint founders of a large collection of theatrical memorabilia. Both began their careers as actors, but what began as a shared hobby turned into full-time work in running the Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection (MMTC) and writing books, reviews and articles on theatre, opera and ballet. The collection remained their private property until 1977, when they handed it over to a trust. After the deaths of the founders the collection was moved first to the Jerwood Library of the Performing Arts in Greenwich, and, in 2010, to the Theatre Collection of the University of Bristol. The Old Vic
The Old Vic is a 1,000-seat, nonprofit organization, not-for-profit producing house, producing theatre in Waterloo, London, Waterloo, London, England. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, and renamed in 1833 the Royal Victoria Theatre. In 1871 it was rebuilt and reopened as the Royal Victoria Palace. It was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 and formally named the Royal Victoria Hall, although by that time it was already known as the "Old Vic". In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis, assumed management and began a series of William Shakespeare, Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during The Blitz, air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened. Bristol Old Vic
Bristol Old Vic is a British theatre company based at the Theatre Royal, Bristol. The present company was established in 1946 as an offshoot of the Old Vic in London. It is associated with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which became a financially independent organisation in the 1990s. Bristol Old Vic runs a Young Company for those aged 7–25. The Theatre Royal, the oldest continually-operating theatre in the English-speaking world, was built between 1764 and 1766 on King Street in Bristol.
