Ardler, Perth And Kinross
Ardler is a small village in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It is situated approximately east of Coupar Angus, and approximately equidistant between the latter and Meigle. History The present village evolved from a planned railway village called Washington, planned in 1835 in connection with the Dundee and Newtyle Railway. After initial building works Washington failed to expand as had been expected. In his history of the village Christopher H. Dingwall attributed this to the decline of the rural textile industry and the rapid expansion of railways meaning that Washington quickly lost its advantage of being one of the few settlements in the area connected to a railway. Railway rebuilding as part of the construction of the Scottish Midland Junction Railway led to the removal of the station at Washington village and its replacement with a station called Ardler railway station, Ardler slightly further away from the village. Perth And Kinross
Perth and Kinross ( sco, Pairth an Kinross; gd, Peairt agus Ceann Rois) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland and a Lieutenancy Area. It borders onto the Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll and Bute, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Fife, Highland and Stirling council areas. Perth is the administrative centre. With the exception of a large area of south-western Perthshire, the council area mostly corresponds to the historic counties of Perthshire and Kinross-shire. Perthshire and Kinross-shire shared a joint county council from 1929 until 1975. Coupar Angus
Coupar Angus (; Scottish Gaelic, Gaelic: ''Cùbar Aonghais'') is a town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, south of Blairgowrie and Rattray, Blairgowrie. The name Coupar Angus serves to differentiate the town from Cupar, Fife. The town was traditionally on the border between Angus, Scotland, Angus and Perthshire, the town centre being in Perthshire. The Angus part was transferred to Perthshire in 1891, but the town retained its name. Meigle
Meigle ( gd, Mìgeil, ) is a village in Strathmore, Scotland. It lies in the council area of Perth and Kinross in the Coupar Angus and Meigle ward. It lies on the A94 road between Perth and Forfar. Other smaller settlements nearby are Balkeerie, Kirkinch and Kinloch. Meigle is accessed from the north and south via the B954 road. In 1971 it had a population of 357. Etymology The name ''Meigle'' is of Pictish origin. Recorded as ''Migdele'' in the Legend of Saint Andrew, the first element is ''*mig'', meaning "swamp, bog, quagmire", and the second is ''dol'', "field, meadow" (c.f. Welsh ''mig-dôl). Dundee And Newtyle Railway
The Dundee and Newtyle Railway opened in 1831 and was the first railway in the north of Scotland. It was built to carry goods between Dundee and the fertile area known as Strathmore; this involved crossing the Sidlaw Hills, and was accomplished with three rope-worked inclined planes. Newtyle was simply a remote railhead, and the anticipated traffic volumes were not achieved, the inclines incurred heavy operating costs, and the railway never made money. Responding to the criticism of the remote Newtyle station, two further railways were built; these were nominally independent but for practical purposes were branches of the Dundee line. The lines were the ''Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway'' and the ''Newtyle and Glammiss Railway''; they opened in 1837 - 1838. Scottish Midland Junction Railway
The Scottish Midland Junction Railway was authorised in 1845 to build a line from Perth to Forfar. Other companies obtained authorisation in the same year, and together they formed a route from central Scotland to Aberdeen. The SMJR opened its main line on 4 August 1848. Proposals to merge with other railways were rejected by Parliament at first, but in 1856 the SMJR merged with the Aberdeen Railway to form the Scottish North Eastern Railway. The SNER was itself absorbed into the larger Caledonian Railway in 1866. The original SMJR main line was now a small section of a main line from Carlisle and central Scotland to Aberdeen. The original route was well aligned for fast running, but it by-passed numerous towns and many branches were built to serve them. ''The Courier'' (known as ''The Courier & Advertiser'' between 1926 and 2012) is a newspaper published by DC Thomson in Dundee, Scotland.
