The Arca Foundation is a progressive American philanthropic foundation. Founded in 1952 as the Nancy Reynolds Bagley Foundation, the foundation was renamed the Arca Foundation in 1958. The foundation was founded with assets from the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Since its inception, the Arca Foundation has made grants totaling over $50 million. Margery Tabankin
Margery Tabankin (born 1948) is an American progressive political activist. She is known for serving as a conduit between Hollywood donors and liberal political causes in Washington D.C. Biography Tabankin became a nationally known campus radical during the 1960s. She was inspired to become a part of the New Left political movement after hearing activist Tom Hayden give a speech in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Weequahic High School in 1965. Tabankin became an anti-war activist while attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison. At age 23, Tabankin was elected the first woman president of the National Student Association. In late 1969, she was picked to become one of the first women student trainees at leftist activist Saul Alinsky's School of Community Organizing in Chicago. Donna Edwards
Donna Fern Edwards (born June 28, 1958) is an American politician who served as the U.S. representative for from 2008 to 2017. The district included most of Prince George's County, as well as part of Anne Arundel County. She is a member of the Democratic Party. A lawyer and longtime community activist, she defeated eight-term incumbent Albert Wynn in the 2008 Democratic primary and, following his resignation, won a special election on June 17, 2008, to fill the remainder of this term. She was sworn in two days later on June 19, becoming the first African-American woman to represent Maryland in the United States Congress. Edwards ran for a full term in November 2008, defeating Republican candidate Peter James with 85% of the vote. Maryland's 4th congressional district comprises portions of Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County. The seat is represented by Anthony Brown, a Democrat. The district includes most of the majority-black precincts on the Maryland side of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The United States embargo against Cuba prevents American businesses, and businesses organized under U.S. law or majority-owned by American citizens, from conducting trade with Cuban interests. It is the most enduring trade embargo in modern history. The US first imposed an embargo on the sale of arms to Cuba on March 14, 1958, during the Fulgencio Batista regime.
