Araia, Álava
Araia is a village in the province of Álava, Basque Country, Spain. It is the capital of the municipality of Asparrena. It has a population of 1,218 inhabitants (2006) and has an altitude of 604 meters. One of medieval roads from the port of San Adrián to the Plains of Alava passed through Araia. It was an important pilgrimage and trade route. Description Araia is a starting point for mountaineers who ascend to the nearby Altzaina and Entzia mountains. Near to Araia there are the Ilarduia and Egino climbing schools. The Leze Provincial Park are worth admiring. Here is a ravine of the caves of the same name and the entire Peñas de Egino area in which the most authentic climbing school in Álava is located. Also important for the village is the natural landscape of the river Zirauntza, which was one of the incentives for establishing in the village, along with the Santa Ana Bolueta of Bilbao, the first Basque steelworks. Francesco Domenico Araja (or Araia, Russian: Арайя) (June 25, 1709 in Naples, Kingdom of Sicily – between 1762 and 1770 in Bologna, States of the Church) was an Italian composer who spent 25 years in Russia and wrote at least 14 operas for the Russian Imperial Court including ''Tsefal i Prokris'', the first opera in Russian. Biography He was born and received his musical education in Naples and began to compose operas at the age of 20. His early operas were produced in the theatres of Naples, Florence, Rome, Milan, and Venice. In 1735 he was invited to St. Petersburg together with a big Italian opera troupe, and became the ''maestro di cappella'' (''Kapellmeister'') to Empress Anne Ioanovna and later Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. In the winter operas were usually given in a wing of the Zimniy Dvorets (the Winter Palace), and in the summer time in the Theatre of Letniy Sad in the Summer Garden. Semhar Araia is an Eritrean American social activist, professor and international lawyer. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Diaspora African Women's Network (DAWN) non-governmental organization. Semhar was recently appointed aUNICEF USAManaging Director of Diaspora and Multicultural Partnership. Personal life Araia was born between 1978 and 1979 in New York City to immigrants from Eritrea. Her parents had emigrated to the United States in the late 1960s for education and work. She was named after the coastal Eritrean province of Semhar. For her post-secondary studies, Araia earned a bachelor's degree from the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota), University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was subsequently admitted to the University of Michigan and American University law schools, but opted instead to attend the Marquette University Law School in Wisconsin in order to remain closer to her family.
