''Aqua'' is the debut solo album by Tangerine Dream frontman Edgar Froese Edgar Willmar Froese (; 6 June 1944 – 20 January 2015) was a German musical artist and electronic music pioneer, best known for founding the electronic music group Tangerine Dream in 1967. Froese was the only continuous member of the group ..., released in 1974. It was originally released in two different mixes, one by Brain Records in Germany, and the other by Virgin Records in the rest of the world. There is also a re-recorded version from 2005 on Eastgate. Edgar Froese
Edgar Willmar Froese (; 6 June 1944 – 20 January 2015) was a German musical artist and electronic music pioneer, best known for founding the electronic music group Tangerine Dream in 1967. Froese was the only continuous member of the group until his death. Although his solo and group recordings prior to 2003 name him as "Edgar Froese", his later solo albums bear the name "Edgar W. Froese". Biography Froese was born in Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Russia), on D-Day during World War II; members of his family, including his father, had been killed by the Nazis and after the war his mother and surviving family settled in Berlin. He took piano lessons from the age of 12, and started playing guitar at 15. After showing an early aptitude for art, Froese enrolled at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin to study painting and sculpture. Virgin Records is a record label owned by Universal Music Group. It originally founded as a British independent record label in 1972 by entrepreneurs Richard Branson, Simon Draper, Nik Powell, and musician Tom Newman. Brain Records
Brain was a Hamburg-based record label prominent in the 1970s releasing several important Krautrock records by bands such as Neu!, Cluster and Guru Guru. Many of its more prominent records are currently being reissued on CD by Repertoire Records. In the middle of 1971, Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's management style at Ohr caused two of his A&R men, Bruno Wendel and Günter Körber, to leave Ohr and set up their own record company, which they called Brain. Wendel & Korber brought Guru Guru with them from Ohr, and immediately signed Cluster, who had recorded one LP for Philips; they soon recorded and released ''Cluster II''. Brain was rapidly a success throughout West Germany and much of western Europe, although had little presence in the US. ''Epsilon in Malaysian Pale'', issued as ''Ypsilon in Malaysian Pale'' by Brain Records in Germany, is the second studio album by German recording artist Edgar Froese, released in 1975. Recording and history ''Epsilon in Malaysian Pale'' was recorded in June and July 1975, following Tangerine Dream's Australian tour, and was heavily influenced by the places they had visited whilst on the tour. David Bowie named ''Epsilon in Malaysian Pale'' as an influence for his Berlin Trilogy albums ''Low'', ''"Heroes"'' and ''Lodger''. "It was the soundtrack of my life when I lived in Berlin", Bowie once said. The album consists of two instrumental compositions, each originally filling one side of vinyl. The first, "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale", is a Mellotron-based piece inspired by Froese's visit to a Malaysian jungle. Tangerine Dream is a German electronic music band founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese. The group has seen many personnel changes over the years, with Froese having been the only constant member until his death in January 2015. The best-known lineup of the group was its mid-1970s trio of Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann. In 1979, Johannes Schmoelling replaced Baumann. Since Froese's death in 2015, the group has been under the leadership of Thorsten Quaeschning (Froese's chosen successor and the current longest-serving band member, having joined in 2005).
