''Appointment with Murder'' is a 1948 American crime film directed by Jack Bernhard and starring John Calvert, Catherine Craig and Jack Reitzen. The film is one of three made by the low-budget Film Classics company featuring Calvert as The Falcon who had previously been played by George Sanders and Tom Conway for RKO.Hardy p.124 Premise The Falcon travels to Milan to locate some stolen paintings for an insurance company. Jack Bernhard
Jack Bernhard (November 28, 1914 – March 30, 1997) was an American film and television director. His films include ''Decoy (1946 film), Decoy'' (1946), ''Blonde Ice'' (1948), ''Unknown Island'' (1948) and ''The Second Face'' (1950). Personal life Bernhard was married to the British actress Jean Gillie, whom he met while serving in Britain during World War II. She appeared in his debut film ''Decoy (1946 film), Decoy''.Mayer & McDonnell p.164 They divorced in 1947, and Gillie died in 1949. He married actress Vicki Lester in 1947; they remained married until his death in 1997. RKO Pictures
RKO Radio Pictures Inc., commonly known as RKO Pictures or simply RKO, was an American film production and distribution company, one of the "Big Five" film studios of Hollywood's Golden Age. The business was formed after the Keith-Albee-Orpheum (KAO) theater chain and Joseph P. Kennedy's Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) studio were brought together under the control of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in October 1928. RCA chief David Sarnoff engineered the merger to create a market for the company's sound-on-film technology, RCA Photophone, and in early 1929 production began under the RKO name (an abbreviation of Radio-Keith-Orpheum). Michael Mark (born Morris Schulman; 15 March 1886 – 3 February 1975) was a Russian-born American film actor. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1928 and 1969. Biography Born in 1886 in Mogilev, Russian Empire (now Belarus), he immigrated to the United States in 1910. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was used by Universal Studios in minor roles for several Frankenstein movies, although he played different parts in each of them. He may perhaps best-remembered, if not by name, as the desperate father of the killed girl in ''Frankenstein'' (1931) with Boris Karloff. Michael Mark died in Los Angeles, California, aged 88, in 1975. A jay is a member of a number of species of medium-sized, usually colorful and noisy, passerine birds in the Crow family (biology), family, Corvidae. Ben Welden (born Benjamin Weinblatt; June 12, 1901 – October 17, 1997) was an American character actor who played a wide variety of Damon Runyon-type gangsters in various movies and television shows. Early years Welden was born in Toledo, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Career Welden's film debut occurred in the British production ''The Man from Chicago'' (1930). After freelancing for several years, he signed with Warner Bros. in 1937. Short, balding and somewhat rotund, Welden often literally played a "heavy", frequently in a somewhat comical or slightly dim-witted way, offsetting the sinister nature of his character's actions. Carl Peter Brocco (January 16, 1903 – December 20, 1992) was an American screen and stage actor. He appeared in over 300 credits, notably ''Spartacus'' (1960) and '' One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'' (1975), during his career spanning over 60 years. Early years Brocco was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Brocco. Career Brocco acted on stage with the Walter Hampton Players. He debuted on Broadway in ''Centuries'' (1927); he also performed in ''The Merry Wives of Windsor'' (1938). Brocco appeared as a criminal type in several episodes of '' Adventures of Superman''.
