Apostolic Nunciature To The Association Of Southeast Asian Nations
The Apostolic Nunciature to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio with the rank of an ambassador. The two prelates who have served as nuncio have held other offices concurrently and the offices of the Nunciature to ASEAN, first located in Singapore are now based in Jakarta, Indonesia. The only other representation of the Holy See to an international organization at the nunciature level is the Apostolic Nunciature to the European Union. The Nunciature was established on 18 June 2011 with the appointment of the first nuncio, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli. An apostolic nuncio ( la, nuntius apostolicus; also known as a papal nuncio or simply as a nuncio) is an ecclesiastical diplomat, serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or to an international organization. A nuncio is appointed by and represents the Holy See, and is the head of the diplomatic mission, called an Apostolic Nunciature, which is the equivalent of an embassy. The Apostolic Nunciature to the European Union is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio with the rank of an ambassador. Its offices are in Brussels, which serves as the de facto capital of the European Union (EU). It was called the Apostolic Nunciature to the European Community until 2009. Leopoldo Girelli
Leopoldo Girelli (born 13 March 1953) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who serves as the apostolic nuncio to India and to Nepal. He was nuncio to Israel and to Cyprus as well as apostolic delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine from 2017 to 2021. He has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 1987 and previously served as nuncio to Indonesia, East Timor and Singapore. Biography Girelli was born in Predore, Province of Bergamo, Italy, on 13 March 1953. He was ordained a priest on 17 June 1978 and incardinated in the diocese of Bergamo. He graduated in theology. Piero Pioppo
Piero Pioppo (born 29 September 1960) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church, who has been Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia since 2017. Biography Piero Pioppo was born in Savona, in Liguria, on 29 September 1960. He studied at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Turin. Piero Pioppo was ordained a priest on 28 June 1985 for the diocese of Acqui First named vicar of a parish at Carcare, he was sent to Rome to continue his studies. He has a degree in dogmatic theology and a degree in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. For a year, he taught Catholic Theology in Alessandria. This is a list of diplomatic missions of the Holy See. Since the fifth century, long before the founding of the Vatican City State in 1929, papal envoys (now known as nuncios) have represented the Holy See to foreign potentates. Additionally, papal representatives known not as nuncios but as apostolic delegates ensure contact between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the Holy See. At present, there is one residential apostolic delegate, for Jerusalem and Palestine, as well as non-residential delegates for four countries (Brunei, Laos, Mauritania, and Somalia) and for the territories and countries without diplomatic relations with the Holy See in three regions (the Arabian Peninsula, the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean).
