Apostolic Delegation To Puerto Rico
The Apostolic Delegation to Puerto Rico represents the interests of the Holy See in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Its head is titled the Apostolic Delegate. His position is ecclesiastical, not diplomatic. The papacy has used a series of representatives and territorial structures to manage its affairs in Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean region generally. It began in 1898 with a delegation that was based in Havana and assigned responsibility for Cuba and Puerto Rico. On 7 December 1925, Pope Pius XI replaced that with the Apostolic Delegation to the Antilles, still seated in Havana, with responsibility for the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The Holy See overhauled that arrangement in 1938. Timothy Paul Andrew Broglio (born December 22, 1951) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, since 2008, and as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops since 2022. Emil Paul Tscherrig (born 3 February 1947) is a Swiss prelate of the Catholic Church who has spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He became an archbishop in 1996 and has since held assignments as Apostolic Nuncio to several countries, most recently to Italy and San Marino. Eugenio Sbarbaro (born 3 July 1934) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Manuel Monteiro de Castro (born 29 March 1938) is a Portuguese prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1967 to 2009, with the rank of archbishop and the title of nuncio from 1985. Pietro Benedetti, MSC (19 May 1867 – 7 September 1930) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who was a leader of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and also worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See in Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico for several years. Biography Pietro Benedetti was born on 19 May 1867 in Falvaterra, Italy. He joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1883 and was ordained a priest on 21 December 1889. He taught for a decade in Barcelona, developing a personal relationship with the Catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer.
