Antoine Thomas
Antoine Thomas (25 January 1644 – 29 June 1709) was a Jesuit priest from the Spanish Netherlands, and missionary and astronomer in Qing China. His Chinese name was 安多. Early life Born in Namur, Belgium in 1644, Thomas joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1660 and first taught in the schools of Armentières, Huy and Tournai. Equipped with a thorough training in Mathematics and Astronomy he was sent, at his own request, as missionary to China (1677). After a long and difficult sea journey - passing through Goa, Siam (Thailand), and Malacca - he reached Macau in 1682 just in time to observe an eclipse of the Sun (1683). At the Chinese imperial court Thomas was called by the aging Father Ferdinand Verbiest, who had just found himself appointed 'vice-president of the Tribunal of Mathematics', (a very important and influential post in the Qing Empire of China), to join him in Beijing. Antoine Léonard Thomas (1 October 1732 – 17 September 1785) was a French poet and literary critic, best known in his time for his great eloquence, especially for éloges in praise of past luminaries. It was in recognition of this that he was elected to Académie Française. In an award-winning 1765 essay in praise of René Descartes, he penned a fuller form of the cogito in French as "." With rearrangement and compaction, the passage translates to "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am," or in Latin, "''dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum''." Antoine Jean-Baptiste Thomas
Antoine Jean-Baptiste Thomas (1791–1834) was a French painter and lithographer. Thomas mentored under François-André Vincent, and later studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. Thomas lived and traveled around Italy, which inspired many of his works. He specialized in oil paintings, often depictions of Italian daily life or ancient rome. He was also commissioned to paint a number of religious works for various churches. In 1816 he won the Prix de Rome with his piece ''Oenone Refusing to Help the Wounded Paris''. He spent two years studying art in Rome and returned to Paris in 1818. Between 1819 and 1831 he exhibited his paintings at Salons, however today he is best known for his series of lithographs, ''One Year in Rome and Its Environs''.
