Antigono (Mazzoni)
''Antigono'' is a 1755 setting by Antonio Maria Mazzoni of the libretto by Pietro Metastasio. It was in rehearsal as the third opera for Lisbon's Ópera do Tejo when the Lisbon earthquake struck on 1 November. The opera was not performed until 2011. Antonio Maria Mazzoni (4 January 1717 – 8 December 1785) was an Italian composer.Mozart Briefe und Aufzeichnungen: Gesamtausgabe Wilhelm A. Pietro Metastasio
Pietro Antonio Domenico Trapassi (3 January 1698 – 12 April 1782), better known by his pseudonym of Pietro Metastasio (), was an Italian poet and librettist, considered the most important writer of '' opera seria'' libretti. Early life Metastasio was born in Rome, where his father, Felice Trapassi, a native of Assisi, had taken service in the Corsican regiment of the papal forces. Felice married a Bolognese woman, Francesca Galasti, and became a grocer in the ''Via dei Cappellari''. The couple had two sons and two daughters; Pietro was the younger son. Pietro, while still a child, is said to have attracted crowds by reciting impromptu verses on a given subject. On one such occasion in 1709, two men of distinction stopped to listen: Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina, famous for legal and literary erudition as well as his directorship of the Arcadian Academy, and Lorenzini, a critic of some note. Ópera Do Tejo
The Ópera do Tejo (, Tagus Opera) or Real Casa da Ópera (Royal Opera House) was a luxurious opera house in Lisbon, Portugal. It was inaugurated on March 31, 1755, and destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake on November 1 of the same year. The theater was located in the historic center of Lisbon, next to the Tagus river in the area, attached to the old Ribeira Palace. The project was commissioned by José I of Portugal for the Italian architect Giovanni Carlo Galli da Bibbiena. 1755 Lisbon Earthquake
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the Great Lisbon earthquake, impacted Portugal, the Iberian Peninsula, and Northwest Africa on the morning of Saturday, 1 November, Feast of All Saints, at around 09:40 local time. In combination with subsequent fires and a tsunami, the earthquake almost completely destroyed Lisbon and adjoining areas. Seismologists estimate the Lisbon earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 or greater on the moment magnitude scale, with its epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about west-southwest of Cape St. Vincent and about southwest of Lisbon. Chronologically, it was the third known large scale earthquake to hit the city (following those of 1321 and 1531). Estimates place the death toll in Lisbon at between 12,000 and 50,000 people, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in history. Michael Spyres
Michael Spyres is an American operatic baritenor. He is particularly associated with the bel canto repertoire, especially the works of Rossini, and heroic roles in French grand opera. Biography Michael Spyres was born in 1979 in Missouri, US, and studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Austria. He won acclaim and international recognition for his performance in the title role of Rossini's ''Otello'' at the Rossini in Wildbad festival in Germany in 2008. He made his debut at La Scala, Milan, in Rossini's ''Il viaggio a Reims'' in 2009 and appeared the same year in the extremely demanding leading role of Raoul in Meyerbeer's '' Les Huguenots'' at Bard SummerScape in New York. Enrico Onofri
Enrico Onofri (born 1 April 1967) is an Italian violinist and conductor specialising in Baroque music. Career Born in Ravenna, Onofri is often invited to participate in the productions of ensembles such as La Capella Reial de Catalunya conducted by Jordi Savall, the Concerto Italiano conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini and the Concentus Musicus Wien conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Since 1987, he has been concertmaster of the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico and has made recordings for the Teldec label, performing the Italian repertoire for violin and orchestra. Since 2002, Onofri has performed in Europe and Japan also as a conductor. Since 2005, he has been the director of the Divino Sospiro ensemble based at the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon.
