San Sebastián

Atano III Fronton
Atano III is a Basque pelota short fronton located at the Anoeta Sports Complex in San Sebastián, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. History The fronton was built in 1963 by the municipality, due to the high demand by the professional and aficionate players of the Gipuzkoa province, originally named Anoeta fronton. In 1995, after repair and maintenance work the fronton was renamed after Mariano Juaristi Mendizábal who played with the pseudonym of "Atano III", often considered one of the best ''pelotaris'' of all time. Modalities The main modalities played in the Atano III fronton are Hand-pelota and Paleta-rubber. Amarapedia
Amarapedia is a collaborative project linking the quarter of Amara in Donostia-San Sebastián and the on-line encyclopaedia Wikipedia, which is focused on the facilities of local information system, covering subjects such as places, buildings, facilities, and streets. Amarapedia is inspired by the Welsh experience of Monmouthpedia and it was a pilot project for future larger-scale projects that took place in the city of Donostia-San Sebastián in 2016, when the city was the European Capital of Culture. Inception The idea of Amarapedia was conceived by active cultural members and Wikipedians of San Sebastián. The initial goal is to encourage the citizens' involvement in an inclusive way through articles about the quarter of Amara and its neighborhood. This is a continuation of the work done with associations of the neighbourhood within ''Amarauna'' project (this word means "net" in the Basque language), and is one of the starting points of the citywide Donostiapedia project. Fronton (court)
A fronton ( es, frontón; eu, frontoi or ; french: fronton) is a two-walled or single-walled court used as a playing area for Basque pelota. History The front wall of the first frontons in villages was usually the wall of a church. Because the games being played close by, several priests would play pelota along with the villagers and got to be well-known players and often served as referees in provincial or town competitions but were out of the picture when it turned into a commercialized sport. Because of the increasing popularity of the game, many churches put up signs forbidding pelota games on their porches. The games were also played in town halls, but when the game turned into a highly popular entertainment in the region, towns started to build special frontons in open-air or closed courts.
