Annona Moaensis
''Annona moaensis'' is a species of plant in the family Annonaceae. It is endemic to Cuba. Frère León and Henri Alain Liogier, the botanists who first formally described the species, named it after Moa, Cuba where the specimen they observed was collected. Description It is a bush reaching 2–3 meters in height. Its branches have white lenticels. Its leaves are 5-9 by 1-2 centimeters and come to tapering point. The upper surface of the leaves are glossy, the undersides are lightly covered in wooly hairs. The leaves have 18-20 secondary veins emanating from its midrib. Its petioles are 3-6 millimeters long, covered in rust-colored wooly hairs and have a groove on their upper surface. Its flowers are on 1-1.5 centimeter long, black peduncles that are covered in white wooly hairs. Frère León
Frère León ( en, Brother León, es, Hermano León; December 31, 1871 – November 20, 1955) was a French-born Cuban botanist and De La Salle Brother. Born Joseph Sylvestre Sauget in Arbois, Jura, León was an important contributor to the botanical exploration of Cuba and co-authored, with Frère Alain, the five-volume ''Flora of Cuba'' which remains the standard reference on the topic. Early life and education Joseph Sylvestre Sauget was born in Arbois, Jura, in France on December 31, 1871. He obtained his secondary education in Dijon before joining the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and adopting the name León. Professional life Frère León made extensive collections of Cuban plants, culminating with the production of the ''Flora of Cuba''. He arrived in Cuba in 1905 after spending a year teaching in Canada. In botany, a peduncle is a stalk supporting an inflorescence or a solitary flower, or, after fecundation, an infructescence or a solitary fruit. Henri Alain Liogier
Henri Alain Liogier, also known as Brother Alain (January 31, 1916 – November 9, 2009) was a French botanist, educator, and member of the clergy based out of Texas, United States. Liogier is responsible for over 100 scientific journal articles and over 30 books devoted to the study of botany. He published the quintessential work on the flora of Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and these works are the foundation of botanical science for the Caribbean. During his life's work, he discovered over 300 species of plants all of which can be found at the New York Botanical Garden where he also served as a research associate. He was a founding member of the Academy of Science and first scientific director of the National Botanical Garden in the Dominican Republic. A lenticel is a porous tissue consisting of cells with large intercellular spaces in the periderm of the secondarily thickened organs and the bark of woody stems and roots of dicotyledonous flowering plants.
