Anna Paulowna-class Frigate
The ''Anna Paulowna'' class was a class of steam frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Only Anna Paulowna was completed, parts of Van Galen were used to build the steam corvette ''Zilveren Kruis''. Dutch Naval Plans in the 1860s Plan 1855 In May 1855 the Dutch Secretary for the navy Smit van den Broecke, presented an overall plan for the fleet at home and in the East Indies. The heaviest ships of the new fleet would be 3 screw steam frigates of 400 hp, 50 guns and 500 men, to be stationed in the Netherlands. The standard fighting warship for the East Indies would be a screw corvette of 250 hp, 12 30-pounders and 125 men, of which 12 would be built. For policing the many outposts in the Indies 15 sloops of 100 hp, 12 guns and 85 men would be built. Rijkswerf (Amsterdam)
The Rijkswerf (Dutch: ''State shipyard'') in Amsterdam was a Dutch shipyard that build a significant amount of warships for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Predecessors of the Rijkswerf Shipyard of the Amsterdam Admiralty In the time of the Dutch republic naval affairs were handled by 5 local admiralties. The Admiralty of Amsterdam was the most important of these. The First Anglo-Dutch War proved the need for a professional navy. On 12 August 1655, the admiralty therefore got the entire western strip of Kattenburg island for the construction of an arsenal and ship yard. The arsenal was quickly constructed on the southern extremity of Kattenburg island in 1656. It was called 's Lands Zeemagazijn and now houses the National Maritime Museum. HNLMS Groningen (1857)
HNLMS ''Groningen'' was the lead ship of the Groningen class. She was one of the first Dutch purpose designed propeller driven warships, but was demolished after only 5 years of service. Construction Built by a private shipyard ''Groningen'' was constructed by the private shipyard Fop Smit in Slikkerveer / Kinderdijk. For the Netherlands this was exceptional, because since the French period (1794-1815), almost all warships had been built at state shipyards. These state shipyards cost a lot of money. Many politicians thought that closing the state shipyards was a good way to economize. Their opponents claimed that warship construction was fundamentally different from merchant ship construction. Zilveren Kruis-class Corvette
The ''Zilveren Kruis'' class was a class of two steam-powered corvettes of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The class comprised ''Zilveren Kruis'' and ''Van Galen''. Background The career officer Willem Huyssen van Kattendijke became Secretary for the Navy on 14 March 1861. He wanted to have a fleet centered on screw frigates. The March 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads then showed that these were defenseless against armored ships. It put a temporary an end to plans to build new wooden steam frigates. In the 1864 Shimonoseki Campaign unarmored Dutch ships then performed quite well. It led some to believe that armored ships might not be that important in the colonies. Pels Rijcken
Gerhard Christiaan Coenraad (Gerrit) Pels Rijcken (10 January 1810 – 2 May 1889) was a career officer of the Royal Dutch Navy and a politician. As an officer, Pels Rijcken reached the rank of Vice-Admiral. He was Dutch Navy Minister from 1866 to 1868. Biography Pels Rijcken was born in Princenhage, Netherlands, where his father was sheriff as well as an alderman of nearby Breda. His brother later became mayor of Arnhem (1874-1844). He entered the Royal Dutch Navy, becoming a midshipman in 1826, and rose through the ranks by serving on several vessels. The North Sea Canal ( nl, Noordzeekanaal) is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam. Purmerend () is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and in the region of West Friesland.
