Anerood Jugnauth
Sir Anerood Jugnauth, GCSK, (29 March 1930 – 3 June 2021) was a Mauritian statesman, politician and barrister who served both as President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was Member of Parliament for Piton & Riviere Du Rempart. The central figure of Mauritian politics in the 1980s and early 1990s, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1982. He served four consecutive terms as prime minister from 1982 to 1995 and again from 2000 to 2003. He was then elected as President from 2003 to 2012. Following his party's victory in the 2014 general elections, he served his sixth and final term as prime minister, becoming the nation's longest serving prime minister with more than 18 years of tenure, overtaking Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who held the office for 14 years. Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo, GCMG, GCSK, QC, (born Vīracāmi Riṅkāṭu; 20 October 1920 – 9 September 2000) was a Mauritian politician, minister, the sixth and last governor-general of Mauritius from 1986 to 1992, and then the first president of Mauritius from March to June 1992. Early life Born in 1920 in an Indian Tamil family, Ringadoo was educated at Port Louis Grammar School and completed his LLB at the London School of Economics in 1948. Dev Virahsawmy (16 March 1942 – 7 November 2023) was a Mauritian politician, playwright, poet and advocate of the Mauritian Creole language. Though he wrote easily in both French and English, Virahsawmy was most renowned for his efforts to popularise the use of Creole. Early life Virahsawmy was born in Quartier-Militaire, Mauritius on 16 March 1942 to Appanah "Ramdass" Virah Sawmy and Damiyantee "Gouna" Pyndiah. He spent his early childhood in Goodlands, where he lost the use of his left arm due to polio and after the death of his mother he went to live with his grandparents at Beau-Bassin. Constituencies Of Mauritius
Constituencies of Mauritius are the electoral boundaries within the Republic of Mauritius. They are also commonly referred to as ''Circonscriptions'' amongst the locals. The country follows the Westminster system and elects 60 members of parliament for a term of 5 years. There are in all 21 Constituencies in the republic, each of them returning 3 members with the exception of Constituency n°21, which returns only 2 members. The Constitution stipulates that there shall be 20 constituencies and one created specially for the Rodrigues island. The National Assembly () is Mauritius's unicameral legislature, which was called the Legislative Assembly from 1968 until 1992, when the country became a republic. Prior to 1968 and under British rule it was known as the Legislative Council. The Constitution of Mauritius provides for the parliament of Mauritius to consist of the President and the National Assembly. The parliament of Mauritius is modelled after the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy, where members of parliament are voted in at regular general elections, on the basis of a first past the post system. Militant Socialist Movement
The Militant Socialist Movement (, MSM) is a centre-left political party in Mauritius. It was the single largest political party in the National Assembly of Mauritius, having won 42 of the 69 seats in the 2019 general elections; however, following the 2024 election, it only possesses one seat. It also holds the largest number of seats in all city/town councils through the country with 60 councillors out of 120. The party tends to be more popular amongst Indo-Mauritians. Sookdeo Bissoondoyal (25 December 1908 – 18 August 1977) was a Mauritian politician and one of the leading figures in the nation's independence movement. Early life Sookdeo Bissoondoyal was born in Tyack, Rivière des Anguilles in 1908. He had two brothers Basdeo and Soogrim. Paramhamsa Nababsing, more commonly known as Prem Nababsing (24 November 1940 – 21 October 2017), was a Mauritian politician and MMM minister. Early life Nababsing was born in Camp Diable, in the Savanne district of Mauritius. His father was a primary school teacher. By 1960, he completed his secondary education at Royal College Curepipe and secured a scholarship which enabled him to travel to England to study chemistry at University of Exeter. Sir Satcam Boolell GCSK QC (11 September 1920 – 23 March 2006) was a Mauritian politician who served as member of the Legislative Assembly in Mauritius. He died on 23 March 2006, in Curepipe. He was also known as "Somduth" by his peers and family members. Early life and education Born in 1920 on the Gros Billot sugar estate (between New Grove and GrosBois in Grand Port, to Sahadewoo Boolell and Cossilah Choony, Satcam Boolell grew up with five siblings. In the mid-1800s his grandfather had migrated from the village of Singarmau located in Jaunpore, now a district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Sir Charles Gaëtan Duval QC (9 October 1930 – 5 May 1996) was a Mauritian barrister, statesman, and politician, who was the leader of the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD) political party. Early life and education Duval was born in Rose Hill on 9 October 1930 in an upper middle-class Creole family of mixed ancestry. His father Charles was a civil servant and his mother Rosina Henrisson (1902-1989) was a housewife. In 1933, when Gaëtan was only 3 years old, his father died and his uncle Raoul raised him.
