Andrew Wylie (April 12, 1789 – November 11, 1851) was an American academic and theologian, who was president of Jefferson College (1811–1816) and Washington College (1816–1828) before becoming the first president of Indiana University (1829–1851). Early life and education The son of Adam Wylie, a Presbyterian immigrant of Scottish descent from County Antrim, Ireland and farmer in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Andrew was educated at home and in local schools in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1804, at age fifteen, Wylie entered Jefferson College, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated with honors in 1810 and was immediately appointed a tutor at the college. Andrew Wylie (February 25, 1814 – August 1, 1905) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. Education and career Born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Wylie was the eldest son of Andrew Wylie first President of Indiana University. Wylie attended Transylvania University and Indiana University Bloomington, graduating from the latter in 1832. He studied law with Walter Forward, and was admitted to the bar in 1837. He practiced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1837 to 1848, serving at some point on the Pittsburgh City Council and acting in 1845 as Pittsburgh city attorney. In 1848, he moved his practice to Alexandria, Virginia, until about 1861, and thereafter to Washington, D.C., until 1863. Early life Wylie is the son of Craig Wylie (1908–1976), one time editor-in-chief at Houghton Mifflin, and Angela (1915–1989), daughter of the landscape architect and artist Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr, of Oatlands, New York (son of judge Robert Ludlow Fowler, author of many legal texts). Andrew Wylie (born August 19, 1994) is an American football offensive tackle for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Eastern Michigan and went undrafted in 2017, having short stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Los Angeles Chargers before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won Super Bowl LIV and LVII. John Galt (novelist)
John Galt (; 2 May 1779 – 11 April 1839) was a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. Galt has been called the first political novelist in the English language, due to being the first novelist to deal with issues of the Industrial Revolution. Galt was the first superintendent of the Canada Company (1826-1829). The company had been formed to populate a part of what is now Southern Ontario (then known as Upper Canada) in the first half of the 19th century; it was later called "the most important single attempt at settlement in Canadian history". In 1829, Galt was recalled to Great Britain for mismanagement of the Canada Company (particularly incompetent bookkeeping), and was later jailed for failing to pay his son's tuition. Andrew David Hamilton Wyllie FMedSci FRS (1944 – 26 May 2022) was a Scottish pathologist. In 1972, while working with electron microscopes at the University of Aberdeen he realised the significance of natural cell death. He and his colleagues John Kerr and Alastair Currie called this process apoptosis, from the use of this word in an ancient Greek poem to mean "falling off" (like leaves falling from a tree). He completed postdoctoral training in Cambridge University and became Professor of Experimental Pathology at the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1992. He left Edinburgh for a chair at Cambridge in 1998 where he continued to lecture to undergraduate medical and natural sciences students. His works have contributed to the understanding of apoptosis in health and in disease. Andrew Wyllie (born December 1962) is a Scottish civil engineer who was chief executive of the UK-based Costain Group from 2005 until stepping down on 7 May 2019. In November 2018, he became the 154th president of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Career Wyllie grew up in Scotland, being educated at Dunfermline High School and the University of Strathclyde, graduating in 1984 with a BSc in civil engineering. Wyllie began his construction career as a graduate engineer at Taylor Woodrow in 1984, working in Saudi Arabia, Ghana and the Falkland Islands, and gained an MBA from the London Business School in 1993.
