Andreacarus Nesomys
''Andreacarus'' is a genus of mites in the family Laelapidae that are parasitic on small mammals and earwigs in Africa and Madagascar. A number of Australian and New Guinean species were formerly included in the genus, but are now placed in a separate genus '' Juxtalaelaps''. The genus includes the following species: * ''Andreacarus brachyuromys'' Dowling et al., 2007 (on the rodent ''Brachyuromys'' in Madagascar) * ''Andreacarus eliurus'' Dowling et al., 2007 (on the rodent ''Eliurus'' in Madagascar) * ''Andreacarus galidia'' Dowling et al., 2007 (on the carnivoran '' Galidia'' in Madagascar) * '' Andreacarus gymnuromys'' Dowling et al., 2007 (on the rodent ''Gymnuromys'' in Madagascar) * ''Andreacarus hemicentetes'' Fain, 1991 (on the tenrec '' Hemicentetes'' in Madagascar) * ''Andreacarus matthyssei'' Fain, 1991 (on the rodent '' Cricetomys'' in Nigeria) * ''Andreacarus petersi'' Radford, 1953 (on the rodents ''Cricetomys'', '' Arvicanthis'', and '' Mastomys'' and the earwig ...

Mite
Mites are small arachnids (eight-legged arthropods). Mites span two large orders of arachnids, the Acariformes and the Parasitiformes, which were historically grouped together in the subclass Acari, but genetic analysis does not show clear evidence of a close relationship. Most mites are tiny, less than in length, and have a simple, unsegmented body plan. The small size of most species makes them easily overlooked; some species live in water, many live in soil as decomposers, others live on plants, sometimes creating galls, while others again are Predation, predators or Parasitism, parasites. This last type includes the commercially destructive ''Varroa'' parasite of honey bees, as well as scabies mites of humans. Most species are harmless to humans, but a few are associated with allergies or may transmit diseases. The scientific discipline devoted to the study of mites is called acarology. Evolution and taxonomy The mites are not a defined taxon, but is used for two disti ...

Voalavo
''Voalavo'' is a genus of rodent in the subfamily Nesomyinae, found only in Madagascar. Two species are known, both of which occur in mountain forest above 1250 m (4100 ft) altitude; the northern voalavo lives in northern Madagascar and eastern voalavo is restricted to a small area in the central part of the island. The genus was discovered in 1994 and formally described in 1998. Within Nesomyinae, it is most closely related to the genus ''Eliurus'', and DNA sequence data suggest that the current definitions of these two genera need to be changed. Species of ''Voalavo'' are small, gray, mouse-like rodents, among the smallest nesomyines. They lack the distinctive tuft of long hairs on the tail that is characteristic of ''Eliurus''. The tail is long and females have six mammae. In ''Voalavo'', there are two glands on the chest (absent in ''Eliurus'') that produce a sweet-smelling musk in breeding males. In the skull, the facial skeleton is long and the braincase is smoo ...

Andreacarus Voalavo
''Andreacarus voalavo'' is a parasitic mite found on the Malagasy rodent '' Voalavo gymnocaudus''. First described in 2007, it is closely related to ''Andreacarus gymnuromys'' and ''Andreacarus eliurus'', which are found on other Malagasy rodents. The length of the idiosoma, the main body, is 630 to 670 μm in females and 450 to 480 μm in males. Unlike ''A. eliurus'', this species lacks distinct sternal glands (secretory organs) between two lyrifissures (sensory organs) on the lower part of the female body. The '' pilus dentilis'', a sensory organ on the chelicera, is serrate, which distinguishes it from ''A. gymnuromys''. Females of ''A. gymnuromys'' also have a less ornamented sternal shield (covering part of the underparts) and shorter setae (bristles) on the upperparts. Taxonomy and ecology ''Andreacarus voalavo'' was named in 2007 by Ashley Dowling, Andre Bochkov, and Barry OConnor on the basis of 15 specimens found on an individual of th ...

Tenrec Ecaudatus
The tailless tenrec (''Tenrec ecaudatus''), also known as the common tenrec, is a species of mammal in the family Tenrecidae. It is the only member of the genus ''Tenrec''. Native to Madagascar, it is also found in the Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion, and Seychelles, where it has been introduced. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical forest, grassland, and shrubland, savanna, arable land, pastures, plantations, rural gardens, and urban areas. The tailless tenrec is the largest species of the tenrec family, Tenrecidae. It is in length and weighs up to . It has medium-sized, coarse grey to reddish-grey fur and long, sharp spines along its body. This animal is omnivorous, with a diet consisting of invertebrates and animals such as frogs and mice, as well as leaves. If threatened, this tenrec will scream, erect its spiny hairs to a crest, jump, buck and bite. It shelters in a nest of grass and leaves under a rock, log or bush by day. It gives birth to a litter of as many as ...
