Andrea Olmstead
Andrea Olmstead (born September 5, 1948) is an American musicologist and historian. Reared in Grand Forks,North Dakota, Olmstead studied violin with Burton Kaplan in New York and with Lea Foli at the Aspen Music Festival; she was a member of the New York Youth Symphony and the National Orchestral Association. She then embarked upon the study of musicology; her instructors included Gustave Reese, George Perle, H. Wiley Hitchcock, Barry S. Brook, James Haar, Brian Fennelly, and Jan LaRue. Her teaching career took her to The Juilliard School, from 1972 until 1980; the Aspen Music School, from 1973 to 1976; the Boston Conservatory, from 1981 to 2004; the New England Conservatory,from 2006 to 2018; and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 2009 until 2010. Grand Forks is a city in and the county seat of Grand Forks County, North Dakota, United States. The city's population was 59,166 as of the 2020 census, making it the third-most populous city in the state, after Fargo and Bismarck. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks metropolitan statistical area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or the Grand Cities. Located on the western banks of the north-flowing Red River of the North, in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding. The Red River Flood of 1997 devastated the city. Originally called ''Les Grandes Fourches'' by French fur traders from Canada, who had long worked and lived in the region, steamboat captain Alexander Griggs platted a community after being forced to winter there.
