Anbar Campaign (2003–2011)
The Anbar campaign consisted of fighting between the United States military, together with Iraqi Government forces, and Sunni insurgents in the western Iraqi governorate of Al Anbar. The Iraq War lasted from 2003 to 2011, but the majority of the fighting and counterinsurgency campaign in Anbar took place between April 2004 and September 2007. Although the fighting initially featured heavy urban warfare primarily between insurgents and U.S. Marines, insurgents in later years focused on ambushing the American and Iraqi security forces with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), large scale attacks on combat outposts, and car bombings. Almost 9,000 Iraqis and 1,335 Americans were killed in the campaign, many in the Euphrates River Valley and the Sunni Triangle around the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi. Abdul Sattar Abu Risha ( ar, عبد الستار أبو ريشة) – Sheikh Abdul Sattar Eftikhan al-Rishawi الشيخ عبد الستار افتيخان الريشاوي – (born 1972 – 13 September 2007) was a high-profile Iraqi tribal sheikh of the Abu-Risha tribe. He was the leader of an alliance of Iraqi Sunni Arab tribes that opposed al-Qaeda in Iraq. Abu Risha was assassinated shortly after becoming an ally of the Iraqi government through forming an organisation of fellow tribal chiefs called the ''Sahawat al-Anbar'' (Anbar Awakening), based in Anbar's provincial capital of Ramadi, some west of Baghdad. Life Abu Risha was the grandson of a tribal leader in the Iraqi revolt against the British occupying forces in 1920 and the son of a commander in the Anglo-Iraqi War in 1941. Maamoon Sami Rasheed al-Alwani (born 1957) was an Iraqi politician, who served as governor of the Al Anbar province. He was appointed by the Anbar Provincial Council in May 2005, following the murder of the previous governor, Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi. He was a member of the Abu Alwani clan, part of the Dulaim tribe. His name was found along with the names of other prominent Iraqi Sunni leaders who had been targeted for assassination in a captured al-Qaida in Iraq (AQI) document. Insurgents kidnapped Alwani's son on September 6, 2005, but he was later safely returned. In March 2007, two of Alwani's nieces were killed in improvised explosive device (IED) attacks. Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi ( ar, رجا نواف فرحان المحلاوي) was the Governor of Iraq's Al Anbar province, serving from January 2005 until his death in May 2005. Early life and pre-war career Mahalawi was originally from Qaim in Al Anbar Governorate. He served as Mayor of the town during the tenure of Saddam Hussein. Governorship Following the resignation of Abd al-Karim Barjas in July 2004, an interim governor filled the role of Governor of Anbar. Fasal Al Gaood
Sheikh Faisal Raikan al-Gut al-Nimrawi ( ar, فصال القعود; died 25 June 2007), also known as Fasal al Gaood ( ar, فصال القعود), was a Governor of Anbar, Iraq and an important Iraqi Sunni Muslim ally of the United States. He served as interim governor of the province from July 2004 to January 2005. Fasal al Gaood helped to form an umbrella group of tribal Sunni leaders called the Anbar Salvation Council. The goal of the organization was to ally themselves with U.S. forces against Al Qaeda insurgents in Sunni regions of Iraq, such as Al Anbar. The council had been unfortunately torn by infighting. Al Gaood was killed on June 25, 2007, in a suicide bombing blast at the Mansour Hotel in Baghdad along with 11 others. Abd Al-Karim Barjas
Abdul Karim Burjas al-Rawi (died 14 June 2022) was the first post-invasion Governor of Iraq's Al Anbar province, serving until July 2004, when he resigned. Biography Shortly after the invasion in 2003, Sunni tribal leaders and former Ba'athists, led by members of the Al-Kharbit (Khalifa) and Al-Gaoud (Nimr) families met to select Karim Burjas, a former General, as their unofficial leader and new Governor of Anbar Province. Burjas's position was later recognized by the coalition. Barjas resigned in July 2004 after his 3 sons were released in Fallujah by militants who had been holding them. The militants responsible then released a video on 5 August 2004 showing Barjas resigning and apologizing for opposing the Iraqi insurgency.
