Anarchist Archives
Anarchist archives preserve records from the international anarchist movement in personal and institutional collections around the world. This primary source documentation is made available for researchers to learn directly from movement anarchists, both their ideas and lives. Anarchism, an anti-authoritarian political philosophy of self-governed societies without unjust hierarchies, has spread chiefly through published propaganda literature: pamphlets, books, and newspapers. As a result, American and European anarchists have a history of collecting the movement's written work and anarchist libraries naturally followed. Independent collections Small, independent archival collections include the Kate Sharpley Library and the Boston Anarchist Archives Project. ''La Libre Belgique'' (; literally ''The Free Belgium''), currently sold under the name ''La Libre'', is a major daily newspaper in Belgium. Together with ''Le Soir'', it is one of the country's major French language newspapers and is popular in Brussels and Wallonia. ''Anarchist Studies'' is a biannual academic journal on anarchism. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, examining the history, culture, and theory of anarchism. The journal was established in 1993 and is edited by Ruth Kinna and published by Lawrence and Wishart. Overview The journal focusses on three broad themes: the re-evaluation of anarchist history, with regard to issues of culture, philosophy, and political action; the potential future of anarchism as a form of critical political action; and the application of anarchist ideas as an instrument of scholarly research. The Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS) is a non-profit organization founded by Chuck W. Morse in 1996, following the Anarcho-communism, anarcho-communist school of thought, to assist anarchist writers and further develop theoretical aspects of the anarchist movement. The group's ''Perspectives on Anarchist Theory'' is published annually in cooperation with the Justseeds Artists' Cooperative and printed by Eberhardt Press. libcom.org is an online platform featuring a variety of libertarian communist essays, blog posts, and archives, primarily in English. It was founded in 2005 by editors in the United States and the United Kingdom. Libcom.org also has a forum and social media features including the ability to comment on post and upload original articles. In contrast with traditional archives, anarchistic archival practices embrace "use as preservation", making use of digital technology to host niche political material in online repositories like Libcom.org. The site was launched in 2003 originally as enrager.net, but changed its name in 2005 to the present name libcom.org, short for libertarian communism. Interference Archive is a volunteer-run library, gallery, and archive of historical materials related to social and political activism and movements. It is located in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, at 314 7th St, Brooklyn, NY 11215. The mission of the organization is "to explore the relationship between cultural production and social movements." History Interference Archive began as the personal collection of Josh MacPhee and Dara Greenwald, activists who told the ''New York Times'' that they had filled their home with so much "social movement memorabilia ...
