''An Evening with Gary Lineker'' is a 1991 stage play and 1994 television film both written by Arthur Smith and Chris England. The action takes place against the backdrop of the 1990 Football World Cup semi-final, between England and West Germany, which is taking place in Italy while Monica and Bill are on holiday in Ibiza. Brian Arthur John Smith (born 27 November 1954) is an English alternative comedian, presenter and writer. Early life Smith was born on 27 November 1954 in Bermondsey, south London. His eldest brother is Richard Smith, a medical doctor, editor and businessman. His younger brother is Nick Smith, a civil servant who was also a stand-up comic but in recent years has turned to amateur dramatics. ''My Summer with Des'' is a 1998 comedy drama television film, written by Arthur Smith, and directed by Simon Curtis. Broadcast to coincide with the beginning of World Cup 1998, the story is set during the European football championships in 1996, where football fan Martin finds his life is going from bad to worse after losing his job and splitting up with his girlfriend. It starred Neil Morrissey and Des Lynam, with Rachel Weisz playing the role of his love interest who seems to have the ability to travel through time and know the outcome of the tournament's matches before they happen. At one point Neil Morrissey's character asks her to take him straight to the semi-final between England and Germany, which they then arrive at in the next scene. The film was broadcast on BBC One on 25 May 1998, and released on VHS on 26 May 1998. A DVD was scheduled for a 4 August 2008 release, however this was postponed. John Motson
John Walker Motson (10 July 1945 – 23 February 2023) was an English football commentator. Beginning as a television commentator with the BBC in 1971, he commentated on over 2000 games on television and radio. From the late 1970s to 2008, Motson was the dominant football commentary figure at the BBC, apart from a brief spell in the mid-1990s. Motson often wore a sheepskin coat during winter months after he reportedly "battled horizontal sleet showers ahead of Wycombe Wanderers' FA Cup tie with Peterborough United" in December 1990. 1998 FIFA World Cup
The 1998 FIFA World Cup was the 16th FIFA World Cup, the football world championship for men's national teams. The finals tournament was held in France from 10 June to 12 July 1998. The country was chosen as the host nation by FIFA for the second time in the history of the tournament, defeating Morocco in the bidding process. It was the second time that France staged the competition (the first was in 1938) and the ninth time that it was held in Europe. Spanning 32 days, it is the longest World Cup tournament ever held. Qualification for the finals began in March 1996 and concluded in November 1997.
