''An Englishman's Home'' is a threat-of-invasion play by Guy du Maurier, first produced in 1909. The title is a reference to the expression "an Englishman's home is his castle". Play ''An Englishman's Home'' caused a sensation in London when it appeared anonymously, under the name "A Patriot", in 1909. Ticknor 1922 The writer Guy du Maurier was a regular officer in the British Army, who had seen active service during the South African War and who was to be killed in France in 1915. It first played at Wyndham's Theatre on 27 January MacKenzie 1992 and went on to be a long-running success. It is now considered a typical example of the invasion literature popular at the time. Guy Du Maurier
Guy Louis Busson du Maurier DSO (18 May 1865, London, England – 9 March 1915, Kemmel, Flanders, Belgium) was an English army officer and playwright. He was the son of the writer George du Maurier and brother of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and the actor Gerald du Maurier. Busson du Maurier was educated at Marlborough and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers on 7 February 1885. He was promoted to captain on 15 September 1896, and served in the Second Boer War, where he commanded a mounted infantry regiment, earning a promotion to major on 12 December 1900. For his service in the war, he received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in the October 1902 South African honours list. He achieved notoriety in 1909 as the initially anonymous author of the play An Englishman's Home. Carl Jaffe
Carl Jaffe (21 March 1902 – 12 April 1974) was a German actor. Jaffe trained on the stage in his native Hamburg, Kassel and Wiesbaden before moving to Berlin, where his career began to develop. In 1933 Jaffe changed his stage name to Frank Alwar, but in 1936, with the situation for Jews in Germany rapidly deteriorating, he made the decision to migrate to the United Kingdom. He remained in the UK for the rest of his life and appeared in more than 50 films and many television productions. Throughout his British career he was often cast as German or Central European characters, usually in supporting roles, and often with a war, crime or espionage setting. It is an adaptation of the 1909 play ''An Englishman's Home'' by Guy du Maurier. It was filmed at Denham Studios outside London with production commencing in May 1939. The film's sets were designed by the art director Wilfred Arnold. Paul Henreid (November 10, 1908 – March 29, 1992) was an Austrian-British-American actor, director, producer, and writer. He is best remembered for two film roles; Victor Laszlo in ''Casablanca'' and Jerry Durrance in ''Now, Voyager'', both released between 1942 and 1943. Mary Maguire
Mary Maguire (born Hélène Teresa Maguire; 22 February 1919 – 18 May 1974) was an Australian-born actress who briefly became a Hollywood and British film star in the late 1930s. Early life Maguire was born in Melbourne, Australia, to Michael "Mickey" Maguire, footballer, racehorse owner, hotel proprietor, and former welterweight boxer and Mary Jane Maguire (née Carroll). Nicknamed "Peggy" by the family, she was the second of five sisters. Albert De Courville
Albert Pierre de Courville (26 March 1887 – 15 March 1960) (born in Croydon, England) was a writer and director of theatrical revues, many of which featured the actress and singer Shirley Kellogg, whom he married in June 1913. Career In about 1907 he began work in London as a journalist with the ''Evening News''. A good reporter, he was soon earning as much as £20 a week, but thought there were more possibilities, and money, in the theatre. He joined forces with London impresario Sir Edward Moss and staged revues at the London Hippodrome. In the 1930s he turned to making films.
