Amur Whitefish
The Amur whitefish (''Coregonus ussuriensis'') is a species of freshwater whitefish. It can withstand significant salinity levels. It reaches a maximum size of , with a maximum weight of . Its life expectancy is 10 to 11 years. The Amur whitefish is usually eaten salted or smoked. Distribution Its distribution includes the middle reaches of the Amur, downstream of Blagoveshchensk, all along the lower reaches and including its estuary. It lives as well in the Kukhtuy river, the Tatar Strait and the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. It also has been recorded in Sakhalin, in the lagoons of the northwestern and northeastern coasts, as well as in the Ainskoe and Sladkoe coastal lakes. Lev Semyonovich Berg, also known as Leo S. Berg (russian: Лев Семёнович Берг; 14 March 1876 – 24 December 1950) was a leading Russian geographer, biologist and ichthyologist who served as President of the Soviet Geographical Society between 1940 and 1950. He is known for his own evolutionary theory, nomogenesis (a form of orthogenesis incorporating mutationism) as opposed to the theories of Darwin and Lamarck. Life Lev Berg was born in Bessarabia in a Jewish family, the son of Simon Gregoryevich Berg, a notary, and Klara Lvovna Bernstein-Kogan. He graduated from the Second Kishinev Gymnasium in 1894. Like some of his relatives, Berg converted to Christianity in order to pursue his studies at Moscow State University. At Moscow University, Berg studied hydrobiology and geography. The Songhua or Sunghwa River (also Haixi or Xingal, russian: Сунгари ''Sungari'') is one of the primary rivers of China, and the longest tributary of the Amur. ''Coregonus'' is a diverse genus of fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae). The ''Coregonus'' species are known as whitefishes. The genus contains at least 68 described extant taxa, but the true number of species is a matter of debate. The type species of the genus is '' Coregonus lavaretus''. The Ussuri or Wusuli (russian: Уссури; ) is a river that runs through Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krais, Russia and the southeast region of Northeast China. It rises in the Sikhote-Alin mountain range, flowing north and forming part of the Sino-Russian border (which is based on the Sino-Russian Convention of Peking of 1860), until it joins the Amur as a tributary to it near Khabarovsk.
