Amstel Gold Race (women's Race)
The Women's Amstel Gold Race is the women's event of the Amstel Gold Race, the most important annual road cycling event in the Netherlands. Held in mid-April, it is organized on the same day as the men's race at approximately half the distance. Like the men's event, the race starts in Maastricht and finishes in Berg en Terblijt, Valkenburg. It features 17 categorized climbs, including four ascents of the Cauberg. History Pioneering years and reboot From 2001 to 2003, three editions of the Amstel Gold Race for elite women were held. In 2003, it was part of the UCI Women's Road World Cup. The race started in Maastricht 30 minutes after the men's. It was run over 114 km, taking in nine climbs and similarly finishing on top of the Cauberg. The race was discontinued after the third edition, because organization on the same day and on largely the same roads as the men's race was considered too difficult on the irregular circuits. Limburg (, ) is the southernmost of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. It is bordered by Gelderland to the north and by North Brabant to its west. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (née Blaak; born 22 October 1989) is a Dutch road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . In 2017 she became world road race champion in Bergen, Norway. Career Junior career Van den Broek-Blaak was the Dutch national junior time trial champion in 2006 and 2007. She was European under-23 road race champion in 2009 and was also third in the Ronde van Drenthe race of the UCI Women's Road World Cup in that year. Professional career Van den Broek-Blaak began her professional career in 2008 with the Dutch and remained with them until they disbanded at the end of 2012, after which she raced for the US team for a year. In 2014, she joined and won her first UCI Women's Road World Cup race, the Open de Suède Vårgårda. The fourth edition of the Amstel Gold Race for Women was a road cycling one-day race held on 16 April 2017 in the Netherlands. It was the sixth event of the 2017 UCI Women's World Tour. The race started in Maastricht and finished in Berg en Terblijt, containing 17 categorized climbs, covering a total distance of 121.6 km. It was won by Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen. It was the first edition of the women's Amstel Gold Race after a 14-year hiatus. With the reboot of the women's event and the creation of a Liège–Bastogne–Liège (Women), women's Liège–Bastogne–Liège, in addition to La Flèche Wallonne Féminine, the women's season has the same trio of Ardennes classics as the men's.
