Amiot (car Manufacturer)
The Amiot, later known as the Amiot-Peneau, was a French tractor-type vehicle manufactured in Asnières-sur-Seine from 1897 to 1902. It was not an automobile per se; rather, it was a front-wheel-drive power pack used to convert horse-drawn carriages into motor cars. These devices were quite popular at the time in France and were known as "avant-train", and the Amiot was one of the first on the market. The original Amiot was a four-wheeled unit with a Cyclope or Augé engine; an electric version was also manufactured. The Amiot-Peneau was two-wheeled. Asnières-sur-Seine () is a Communes of France, commune in the Hauts-de-Seine Departments of France, department and Île-de-France Regions of France, region of north-central France. It lies on the left bank of the river Seine, some eight kilometres from the Kilometre zero#France, centre of Paris in the north-western Banlieue, suburbs of the French capital. The inhabitants are called the ''Asniérois'' and the ''Asniéroises'' in French. Name Asnières-sur-Seine was originally known simply as Asnières. The name was recorded for the first time in a papal bull of 1158 – as ''Asnerias'', from Medieval Latin ''asinaria'', meaning "donkey farm". The poor soil of Asnières, where Ericaceae, heather grew in medieval times, was probably deemed suitable only for the breeding of donkeys. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is a form of engine and transmission layout used in motor vehicles, where the engine drives the front wheels only. Most modern front-wheel drive vehicles feature a transverse engine, rather than the conventional longitudinal engine arrangement generally found in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles. A powerpack or power pack is a part of a modular powertrain that contains some type of engine (most frequently an internal combustion engine, ⁣⁣ but other types, including electric motors, are possible) and may also contain a transmission and various supporting components. Applications Power packs are used with certain types of industrial equipment designs, including vehicle designs such as self-propelled modular transporter, hydraulic modular trailer, forklifts and cherry picker lifts, but also stationary equipment such as paint sprayers. Virtually all modern military tanks use them, an early example being the M26 Pershing and Chieftain, and many other military vehicles as well. Latil
Latil was a French automaker specializing in heavy duty vehicles, such as trucks, agricultural equipment, and buses, from 1898 to 1955. It had factories in Paris, Suresnes, and Marseille. History In 1897, Auguste Joseph Frederic Georges Latil (1878-1961) patented a constant-velocity joint, inspired by the knee's patella and which allowed wheels used for steering to also be used for driving, now known as front-wheel drive. This unit could be attached to the front of horse-drawn vehicles. Latil and his friend, mechanic Aloïs Korn, started Korn and Latil Company in Marseille in 1898.
