American Association For The History Of Nursing
The American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the history of nursing in various ways, using history to achieve adequate recognition for professional nurses and the pioneers of nursing, and shaping values and beliefs in nursing in the context of history. The association sponsors an annual autumn conference on nursing history and publishes the annual ''Nursing History Review''. The American Association for the History of Nursing provides important historical resources for helping nurses understand the importance of their profession. Susan Mokotoff Reverby (born 1946) is a Wellesley College professor. She has written on the Tuskegee syphilis experiment, and she uncovered the syphilis experiments in Guatemala. Biography Susan Mokotoff was 14, when she got interested with history at Middletown High School. "I dragged my mother to Philadelphia to see where Benjamin Franklin lived," said Reverby. "I always knew: You had to go to the source." Mokotoff received a B.S. degree in Industrial and Labor Relations/Labor History from Cornell University in 1967, an M.A. in American Civilization from New York University in 1973, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Boston University in 1982. Mary Adelaide Nutting
Mary Adelaide Nutting (November 1, 1858 – October 3, 1948) was a Canadian nurse, educator, and pioneer in the field of hospital care. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University's first nurse training program in 1891, Nutting helped to found a modern nursing program at the school. In 1907, she became involved in an experimental program at the new Teachers College at Columbia University. Ascending to the role of chair of the nursing and health department, Nutting authored a vanguard curriculum based on preparatory nursing education, public health studies, and social service emphasis. She served as president of a variety of councils and committees that served to standardize nursing education and ease the process of meshing nurse-profession interest with state legislation. Nutting was also the author of a multitude of scholarly works relating to the nursing field, and her work, ''A History of Nursing'', remains an essential historic writing today. The word "nurse" originally came from the Latin word "nutrire", meaning to suckle, referring to a wet-nurse; only in the late 16th century did it attain its modern meaning of a person who cares for the infirm.
