Wrestling is a low profile individual sport in Australia that Wrestling Australia is the national governing body of the sport, which organise competitions, and the national and Olympic team duties. In Australia the recognised wrestling styles include freestyle, Greco-Roman, beach and indigenous (Coreeda). Wrestling competitions and associations exist in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. Three Australians have won medals in freestyle events at the Summer Olympics. In Los Angeles in 1932, Eddie Scarf was third in the light-heavyweight division. Wrestling Australia (formerly known as the Australian Wrestling Union) is the organization that currently governs Beach wrestling, Freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling for Men and Women in Australia. Wrestling Australia is also the official representative to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and to United World Wrestling (UWW) and is the Sport governing body, national governing body of the sport. Sport Australia Hall Of Fame
The Sport Australia Hall of Fame was established on 10 December 1985 to recognise the achievements of Australian sportsmen and sportswomen. The inaugural induction included 120 members with Sir Don Bradman as the first inductee and Dawn Fraser the first female inductee. In 1989, the Hall of Fame was expanded to include associate members who have assisted in the development of sport in Australia. In 2012, there were 518 members. Each year the Hall of Fame inducts notable retired athletes, associate members and upgrades one member to 'legend' status. The main award each year is the 'Don' Award but other awards include Team Sport Australia Award, Spirit of Sport Award and Hall of Fame Moments. Jim Armstrong (wrestler)
James Michael Armstrong (14 July 1917 – 8 July 1981) was an Australian sport wrestler and rugby league player. He was born in Albury, New South Wales, and worked as a police officer. Armstrong was selected to play for Australia against Great Britain as a front row forward in the third and deciding Ashes test in 1946, becoming Kangaroo No. 233. He won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling, heavyweight class, at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. At the 1950 British Empire Games Armstrong won the heavyweight wrestling gold medal. Dick Garrard
Richard Edward Garrard, OBE (21 January 1911 – 3 March 2003) was an Australian Olympic wrestler. Garrard was born on 21 January 1911 in Geelong, Victoria. In a thirty-year career, from 1926 to 1956, Garrard lost only nine of 525 bouts, making him Australia's most successful sport wrestler ever. Between 1930 and 1956, he won every Victorian wrestling title and ten national titles in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions. This included not being beaten in a match in Australia for 25 years between 1930 and 1956. In 1934, he competed in the first of what was to be four consecutive Commonwealth Games (then called the British Empire Games, and in 1954, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games) – an achievement amplified by the twelve-year gap between games from 1938 and 1950, due to World War II. Eddie Scarf
Edward Richard Scarf (3 November 1908 – 7 January 1980) was an Australian wrestler and boxer. He was Olympic bronze medalist in Freestyle wrestling in 1932, and also competed at the 1936 Olympics. Early life He was born in Quirindi in New South Wales. He was the fourth child of Michael Eli Scarf and Amelia, née Zraysarty, who had both migrated from Lebanon. He attended Marist Brothers School in North Sydney. Career In February 1938, Scarf won the wrestling gold medal at the Empire Games in Sydney in the light heavyweight division. His victory came in spite of pulling a muscle in his right thigh during the preliminary rounds.
