The women's downhill of the 2006 Winter Olympics was held at San Sicario, Italy, on Wednesday, 15 February. Defending Olympic champion Carole Montillet-Carles was nineteenth in the current season's World Cup downhill standings, headed by Michaela Dorfmeister from Austria. Janica Kostelić of Croatia was defending World Champion, but was fourth in the overall World Cup standings, though she did win a downhill at Bad Kleinkirchheim in mid-January. Dorfmeister won the gold medal, Martina Schild of Switzerland took the silver, and Anja Pärson of Sweden was the bronze medalist. Montillet-Carles finished 28th and Kostelić did not start. Marie Marchand-Arvier
Marie Marchand-Arvier (born 8 April 1985) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from France. Born in Laxou, she won a silver medal in the super-G at the 2009 World Championships. She finished fifth in the combined, and sixth in the downhill. Marchand-Arvier competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where her best result was 15th in the downhill. At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, she finished 7th in the downhill and tenth in the combined at Whistler Creekside. Marchand-Arvier married former biathlete Vincent Jay in June 2014. Franziska Christine "Fränzi" Aufdenblatten (born 10 February 1981) is a retired Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Zermatt, Valais, Aufdenblatten made her World Cup debut in March 2000 in a giant slalom at Sestriere. She scored four podium finishes on the World Cup: one win in a super-G in Val-d'Isère in December 2009, and three third places in downhill at Haus im Ennstal ( 2004), Bad Kleinkirchheim ( 2006), and Lenzerheide (2014). Chimene Mary "Chemmy" Crawford-Alcott ( Alcott; born 10 July 1982) is an English former World Cup alpine ski racer. She competed in all five disciplines: downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom and combined. Alexandra Meissnitzer (born 18 June 1973) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Her specialities were the downhill, super-G, and giant slalom disciplines. From Abtenau, Salzburg, her father, Hans Meissnitzer, a mechanic by trade, taught her to ski at an early age. At the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano, Meissnitzer won the silver in the giant-slalom and the bronze in the super-G, and at the 2006 Winter Olympics at Turin she won the bronze in the super-G. Marie Mancuso (born March 9, 1984) is a retired American World Cup alpine ski racer, Olympic gold medalist and podcast host. She won the giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics, and was the silver medalist in both downhill and combined in 2010, and the bronze medalist in the combined in 2014. She has also won five medals (two silver and three bronze) at the World Championships and seven races in regular World Cup competition.
