Alpine Skiing At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Giant Slalom
The giant slalom is conducted in two runs, with emphasis on manoeuvering rather than speed as the gates are fairly close together – but not as close as in slalom. The giant slalom also promotes endurance, with the primary difference between it and the slalom competition being the length of the course - the difference in level in giant slalom is 300 to 450 metres, while in slalom it is between 180 and 220 metres. This also leads to the gates being further apart in giant slalom. The men's giant slalom took place on 20 February. Stephan Eberharter won the 2002 giant slalom gold, but he had since retire The 2005 World Champion, Hermann Maier had skied ahead of the Olympics, however, and was fourth in the Giant Slalom World Cup - which was headed by Maier's compatriot Benjamin Raich. Sestriere
Sestriere (/se'strjɛre/) ( oc, Sestrieras, pms, Ël Sestrier, french: Sestrières) is a ski resort in Piedmont, Italy, a ''comune'' (municipality) of the Metropolitan City of Turin. Massimiliano "Max" Blardone (born 26 November 1979) is a retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Italy. He specialized in the discipline of giant slalom. Since 2016 he has been a sports commentator for RAI. Biography Born in Domodossola in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, Blardone made his World Cup debut at Sölden, Austria, in October 2000. He made his first World Cup podium in 2004 and his first victory came in 2005. Blardone won seven World Cup races and attained 25 podiums, all in giant slalom. Didier Cuche (born 16 August 1974) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. Career Born in Le Pâquier, Neuchâtel, he competed in the downhill and super-G, along with the giant slalom. He won the World Cup downhill and super-G title for the 2011 season and has won three previous downhill titles in 2010, 2008 and 2007, along with a giant slalom title in 2009. Cuche has 21 World Cup race victories, along with 67 podiums (top three) and 181 top ten finishes. He is also an Olympic silver medalist and has won a total of four World Championships medals (a gold, two silvers, and a bronze). He retired from competition following the 2012 season. Born in Zábřeh na Moravě, Bank began his international career in 1995 when he first competed at the Junior World Championship. His first World Cup race was in January 2001. Bank is a specialist in the combined event, and his two podiums came at Beaver Creek and Kitzbühel. His biggest achievement is fifth place in the Giant Slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
