Alpine Skiing At The 1994 Winter Olympics – Women's Giant Slalom
The Women's giant slalom competition of the Lillehammer 1994 Olympics was held at Hafjell on Thursday, February 24. The defending world champion was Carole Merle of France, as well as the defending World Cup giant slalom champion, while Austria's Anita Wachter led the current season. Italy's Deborah Compagnoni won the gold medal, Martina Ertl of Germany took the silver, and the bronze medalist was Vreni Schneider of Switzerland. Compagnoni led after the first run, followed by Hilde Gerg of Germany and Wachter; Gerg failed to finish, Wachter was fourth, and Merle was fifth. Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. Eva Twardokens
Eva Twardokens (born April 28, 1965, in Reno, Nevada) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer. She made her World Cup debut at age 17 in December 1982. Two seasons later, Twardokens was the bronze medalist in the giant slalom at the 1985 World Championships, and represented the U.S. in two Winter Olympics (1992, 1994). On the World Cup circuit, she had three podiums and 34 top ten finishes. She retired from international competition following the 1995 season. In 2007, Twardokens won the Masters National Weightlifting Champion in the 40-45 age group in the class, with a snatch and a clean and jerk for a total. She was inducted to the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame class of 2011 on April 14, 2012. Her father, Jerzy Twardokens, is an Olympian who fenced for Poland in the 1952 Olympics. Trine Bakke (born 11 January 1975 in Trondheim) is a retired Norwegian alpine skier. By the end of her career, she had won two World cup competitions in slalom (St. Anton 1999 and Maribor, 2000). R̩gine Cavagnoud (27 June 1970 Р31 October 2001) was a World Cup alpine ski racer from France. She was the World Cup and World Champion in Super-G in 2001. Later that year, Cavagnoud was involved in a high-speed collision while training and died two days later. She competed at three Winter Olympics and five world championships. Career Born in Th̫nes, Haute-Savoie, Cavagnoud's career was plagued by injuries. She finally secured a World Cup race victory in her tenth year of competition, a downhill at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, in January 1999. Sylvia Eder (born 24 August 1965) is a former Austrian alpine skier. Biography Born in Leogang, she won her first downhill race at Bad Gastein, Austria in 1982 at the age of 17. The downhill remained her specialty discipline throughout her early career.
