Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. "Off-piste" skiers—those skiing outside ski area boundaries—may employ snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats to deliver them to the top of a slope. Jana Gantnerová-Šoltýsová (born 30 September 1959 in Kežmarok) is a Slovak former alpine skier who competed for Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Winter Olympics, 1980 Winter Olympics, and 1984 Winter Olympics. In December 1980, she won an Alpine Skiing World Cup downhill in Altenmarkt, becoming the first east European skier to win a World Cup race. Petra Wenzel (born 20 November 1961 in Grabs, Saint Gallen, Switzerland) is a former alpine skier who competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics and 1984 Winter Olympics representing Liechtenstein. Career Wenzel made her World Cup debut in 1979 at Lake Placid, finishing 18th in the downhill. She was selected to represent Liechtenstein at the 1980 Winter Olympics, where she competed in Slalom, Giant slalom and Downhill races. Her best result was 14th in the slalom competition. Cynthia Lee Nelson (born August 19, 1955) is former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. Racing career Born and raised in Lutsen in northeastern Minnesota, Nelson's family ran the local ski area and she was on skis before the age of three. She raced in all five alpine disciplines, with a focus on downhill, and was on the World Cup squad of the U.S. Ski Team at age 16. Nelson won the silver medal in the downhill at the 1982 World Championships and was the bronze medalist in the downhill at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Nadezhda Patrikeyeva Andreyeva (russian: Надежда Андреева née Патрикеева; 3 January 1959 – 11 August 2014) was a Russian alpine skier. She competed at the 1980 and 1984 Winter Olympics in the slalom and giant slalom with the best achievement of sixth place in the slalom in 1980. She missed the 1976 Olympics due to a serious injury in a slalom in late 1975, which resulted in a broken pelvis and concussion.
