Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. "Off-piste" skiers—those skiing outside ski area boundaries—may employ snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats to deliver them to the top of a slope. Back-country skiers may use specialized equipment with a free-heel mode, including 'sticky' skins on the bottoms of the skis to stop them sliding backwards during an ascent, then locking the heel and removing the skins for their descent. Wolfgang Junginger
Wolfgang Junginger (27 October 1951 – 17 February 1982) was a German alpine skier who competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics. There he finished on 6th place in Special Slalom and on 4th place in Alpine Combined. Two years before, in World Championships at St. Moritz (Switzerland), he won the bronze medal in Alpine Combined. Mr. Junginger died in an airplane crash when he piloted a small airplane from Munich to Hannover in Germany. Bojan Križaj
Bojan Križaj () (born 3 January 1957) is a Slovenian, back then Yugoslavian, former alpine skier. During his international career he competed for the then-existing Yugoslavia. He competed at three Winter Olympics. Career Križaj, born in Kranj, was a member of a well known Tržič ski family so he started skiing at the age of 3. In the season 1976/77 he received the first World Cup point, qualified among the 15 best slalom runners and later during that season in Madonna di Campiglio he hit his first top 3 podium. On 20 January 1980 he achieved the first Yugoslav World Cup victory in Wengen, Switzerland and later he won seven more times, thus still being Yugoslavia's and Slovenia's most successful male alpine skier to date. Willi Frommelt (born 18 November 1952) is a former Alpine skier from Liechtenstein who won a bronze medal in the slalom at the 1976 Olympics. Curiously during his career, Frommelt had only one podium finish in the World Cup events but four at the Alpine Ski World Championships and in four different discilines. Biography Frommelt is a son of Christof Frommelt, a cross-country skier and the Olympic flag bearer for Liechtenstein at the 1948 Games. Johann Ernst "Hansi" Hinterseer (born 2 February 1954) is an Austrian singer, actor, entertainer and former alpine skier. Sports career Hinterseer is the son of Ernst Hinterseer, who won a gold medal in slalom skiing at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Hans Hinterseer also became a member of the Austrian ski team. Steven Irving Mahre (born May 10, 1957 in Yakima, Washington) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer and younger twin brother (by four minutes) of ski racer Phil Mahre. Career Mahre won the silver medal in slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, 0.21 seconds behind his brother. He won the gold medal in giant slalom at the 1982 World Championships in Schladming, Austria.
