Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre
Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre (23 October 1833 – 30 October 1905), also known as J. B. Louis Pierre, was a French botanist known for his Asian studies. Early life Pierre was born in Saint-André, Réunion, and studied in Paris before working in the botanical gardens of Calcutta, India. Career In 1864 he founded the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, which he directed until 1877, after which he returned to Paris where he lived at 63 rue Monge, close to the Paris Herbarium. In 1883 he moved to Charenton, then to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, then (circa 1893) to Saint-Mandé, and finally to 18 rue Cuvier in Paris, where he lived until his death. Pierre made many scientific explorations in tropical Asia. His publications include the ''Flore forestière de la Cochinchine'' (1880-1907), an article "Sur les plantes à caoutchouc de l'Indochine" (''Revue des cultures coloniales'', 1903) and the section on Sapotaceae in the ''Notes botaniques'' (1890-1891). Achille Eugène Finet (1863, Argenteuil – 1913, París) was a French botanist best known for his study of orchids native to Japan and China. Within the family Orchidaceae, he was the taxonomic authority of the genera '' Arethusantha'', ''Hemihabenaria'', '' Monixus'' and '' Pseudoliparis'' as well as of numerous orchid species. With François Gagnepain, he circumscribed a number of plant species from the family Annonaceae. In 1925 Hu Xiansu named the orchid genus '' Neofinetia'' in his honor. François Gagnepain
François Gagnepain (23 September 1866 – 25 January 1952) was a French botanist. The standard botanical author abbreviation Gagnep. is applied to plants described by Gagnepain. With Achille Eugène Finet, he named a number of species within the botanical family Annonaceae. The genus ''Gagnepainia'' (family Zingiberaceae) was named in his honor by Karl Moritz Schumann. The French Academy of Sciences awarded Gagnepain the ''Prix de Coincy'' for the year 1907. The Annonaceae are a Family (biology), family of flowering plants consisting of trees, shrubs, or rarely lianas commonly known as the custard apple family or soursop family. With 108 accepted genera and about 2400 known species, it is the largest family in the Magnoliales. Several genera produce edible fruit, most notably ''Annona'', ''Anonidium'', ''Asimina'', ''Rollinia'', and ''Uvaria''. Its type genus is ''Annona''.
