King were a British new wave band which formed in 1984. The band achieved chart success in 1985, and are best known for their hit single "Love & Pride", which reached number 2 in the UK. The band had two Top 20 albums (both certified Gold) and five Top 30 singles in the space of a year. Overview The band was formed from the remnants of Coventry rock-ska band the Reluctant Stereotypes, along with producer Paul Sampson. After the Reluctant Stereotypes, singer Paul King formed the Raw Screens, who perfected their act and style to what Paul King and his manager Perry Haines called "Multi Tone", a reference to "Two Tone", and then, in 1983, relaunched the group as band King from the surname of lead singer Paul King. Bitter Sweet (King Album)
''Bitter Sweet'' is the second and final album by the English band King, produced by Richard James Burgess and released by CBS Records in 1985. The album peaked at number 16 in the UK Album Chart and was certified Gold by the BPI. The first single from the album was "Alone Without You" which reached the UK Top 10. Two further singles were taken from the album, "The Taste of Your Tears" (UK #11) and "Torture" (UK #23). The cassette edition of the record featured a slightly different track listing, containing a slow reprise of the first single "Alone Without You", and the 12" extended remix replacing the 7" version of "The Taste of Your Tears". The original 1985 CD edition (made in Japan for Europe) also has a different track order and features remixes of the 2 singles "Torture" and "The Taste of Your Tears" instead of the album versions of these songs. New Wave Music
New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. Paul King (20 November 1960) is a British-Irish singer, musician, VJ and TV presenter. King has released five albums in his musical career. Biography Paul King was born in Galway, County Galway, Ireland and moved to Coventry, England, with his parents at a young age. After graduating from Coventry Drama School, King considered joining the West Midlands Police, but joined rock-ska band the Reluctant Stereotypes. Richard James Burgess
Richard James Burgess (born 29 June 1949) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, composer, author, manager, marketer and inventor. Burgess's music career spans more than 50 years. He came to prominence in the early 1980s as co-founder and co-lead singer of the synthpop band Landscape, which released a top-5 hit in 1981 with the single "Einstein a Go-Go". Burgess is one of the main composers of Landscape's music, and made major musical and lyrical contributions to the band's songs. After the band's break-up, he pursued a brief, moderately successful solo career releasing one mini-album, ''Richard James Burgess'' in 1984. "Love & Pride" is the debut single by Coventry band King, produced by Richard James Burgess and featured on the band's first studio album ''Steps in Time''. The single was first released in April 1984 but was not a success, spending only three weeks on the UK Singles Chart and reaching a lowly No. 84. However, after the group performed the song on Saturday morning television at the end of 1984, CBS Records re-released it and it became a big hit. "Love & Pride" hit No. 2 on the UK chart in February 1985, remaining there for three consecutive weeks and only being held from the top spot by "I Know Him So Well", the duet by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson.
