Almy, Wyoming
Almy was a coal mining camp in Uinta County, Wyoming, United States, near the town of Evanston. In 1881, an explosion killed 38 miners in the Central Pacific Mine, marking the first mine explosion west of the Mississippi River. Another explosion killed 13 in 1886, and a third explosion in Red Canyon in 1895 killed 62 miners, the third worst mining disaster in Wyoming history. Following the second explosion, the Wyoming territorial legislature established the office of the state mining inspector, which eventually shut down the Almy mines in the 1940s after it was deemed too dangerous to mine there. 1881 explosion On March 4, 1881, gases in the Central Pacific Mine number 3 exploded, killing 38 miners. CM Almy is an American producer of clerical clothing founded in 1892 that serves mainly Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian USA, and Roman Catholic ministries. Currently based in Armonk, New York, it is said to be the largest and one of the oldest producers of clerical clothing in the US. The current president of the family-run company is Stephen Fendler. Mary Almy (1883–1967) was an American architect, and a partner at Howe, Manning & Almy, Inc., one of the first architecture firms founded by women in the United States and specializing in domestic architecture. She studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1917 to 1919. Early life and education Almy grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She had polio as a child and walked with crutches throughout her life. In 1905 she graduated from Radcliffe College. She worked as a teacher before developing an interest in architecture. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1919 after three years of study. Max Almy (born 1948) is an American video, digital media, and installation artist. Almy was born in 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska in 1970. She studied at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota and received her Master of Fine Arts from California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California, in 1978. In the 1980s, Almy used video advertising techniques to comment on television and society. Her work was included in the touring exhibition ''Making Their Mark: Women Artists Move into the Mainstream, 1970-1985''.
