Allene Jeanes
Allene Rosalind Jeanes (July 19, 1906 – December 11, 1995) was an American chemical researcher, whose studies focused mainly on carbohydrates and the development of Dextran, a substance that replaced blood plasma in the Korean War. A member of the American Chemical Society, Jeanes published over 60 works, compiled 24 presentations, and received ten patents. Early life and education Jeanes was born July 19, 1906, in Waco, Texas to Viola (Herring) and Largus Elonzo Jeanes, a switchman and later a yardmaster for the Cotton Belt Route of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway. In 1928, she received a bachelor's degree from Baylor University; in 1929, Jeanes obtained a master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley. She was Jewish. Allene Ray (born Allene Ray Burch; January 2, 1901 – May 5, 1979) was an American film actress. Early years Born in Devine, Texas, Ray grew up on her father's ranch with her four sisters and two brothers. She was learning to ride by age 3, and by age 20 she had become "an accomplished horsewoman." Her first job related to films was selling tickets at a movie theater, and her first appearance on film came when Harry Myers arrived in Texas. He shot two reels of film with Ray before he left. Her next opportunity in film came in 1920 when she won a publishing company's beauty contest after her sister submitted her picture as an entry. Career Winning the contest led to her signing with a talent agency, which dropped her last name for professional purposes. Emma Allene Roberts (September 1, 1928 – May 9, 2019) was an American actress. Early years Born in Fairfield, Alabama, Roberts was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Roberts. In 1941, she won the "America's Most Charming Child" contest sponsored by the ''New York Daily Mirror'', receiving $1,000 in cash and a $1,000 contract with Warner Bros. studio. Allene Tew Hostetter Nichols Burchard Köstritz de Kotzebue (July 7, 1872 – May 1, 1955) was an American socialite during the Gilded Age who became a European aristocrat by marriage. Early life Allene Tew was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, on July 7, 1872. Her father, Charles Henry Tew (1849–1925), was a banker in Jamestown, New York, and her mother was Janet ( née Smith) Tew (1854–1923). She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which meant she had to show documentation that she was a descendant of someone who fought in the American Revolutionary War. But she may have doctored the evidence in order to encourage Mrs. Astor, the self-proclaimed queen of aristocratic American society at the turn of the century, to accept her as a member of the upper class despite her middle class upbringing, premarital pregnancy, and shotgun wedding.
