"All Night Long" is a song written, arranged and produced by American musician Rick James for the Mary Jane Girls. In the U.S. the song enjoyed success on the Hot Black Singles Chart peaking at No. 11; on the Dance Chart it peaked at No. 8, but the song failed to succeed in the general public peaking only at No. 101 on the Billboard Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart. It is their only hit song on the UK charts peaking at No. 13. The bassline interpolates Keni Burke's 1982 single "Risin' to the Top". The song has been heavily sampled since its inception, including by artists Groove Theory, LL Cool J and Mary J. Blige. Mary Jane Girls
The Mary Jane Girls were an American girl group formed in 1983, best known for their songs "In My House", " All Night Long", "Candy Man", and their cover version of " Walk Like a Man". They were protégées of musician Rick James and disbanded in 1987. Joanne "Jojo" McDuffie was the lead singer, the others filling out the group's style and appearance. On the studio recordings, McDuffie was backed by session vocalists rather than the other Mary Jane Girls. The group released two albums in the 1980s, and recorded a third – which was shelved for decades but finally released in 2014, as part of a larger retrospective of Rick James' work. The group was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2019. It was written by Blige, Chucky Thompson and Sean "Puffy" Combs for her second studio album, ''My Life'' (1994), while production was helmed by Combs and Thompson. Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, she gained an appreciation of the classical arts from her mother Mi Suk Rogers and of music from her father Charles Rogers, and she also studied dance from an early age and performed in talent contests.
