All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 2007
The 2007 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 121st staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 22 May 2007 and ended on 2 September 2007. Kilkenny were the defending champions, and successfully retained their All-Ireland crown following a 2–19 to 1–15 defeat of Limerick. This put them on level terms with Cork on 30 titles. 2006 Christy Ring Cup
The 2006 Christy Ring Cup was the second staging of the Christy Ring Cup, the Gaelic Athletic Association's inter-county hurling tournament for second tier teams. The cup began on 3 June 2006 and ended on 6 August 2006. Westmeath were the defending champions, however, they availed of their automatic right of promotion to the All-Ireland Championship. Antrim and London contested the cup for the first time. On 6 August 2006, Antrim won the Christy Ring Cup following a 5-13 to 1-7 defeat of Carlow in the final. This was their first Christy Ring Cup title. Down's Paul Braniff was the championship's top scorer with 6-26. Anthony Flaherty came out of retirement at the age of 49 to play for Roscommon against Meath in this competition. Gerald McCarthy (hurler)
Gerald McCarthy (born 12 September 1945) is an Irish former hurling manager and player. In his playing career he was known for his intelligent anticipation, his ability to find open space and his overhead striking of the ball. A versatile player who lined out in no less than eight different positions, McCarthy made his name as an attacking midfielder and as a centre-forward. He is widely regarded to be one of the most skilful and stylish players of his generation and as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Raised in Cork city, McCarthy came to Gaelic games prominence as a schoolboy. Kieran Murphy (Erin's Own Hurler)
Kieran Murphy (born 1983) is an Irish hurler. His league and championship career with the Cork senior team spanned seven seasons from 2002 to 2008. Born in Glounthaune, County Cork, Murphy first played competitive hurling and Gaelic football at Coláiste an Phiarsaigh. He simultaneously came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Erin's Own club, before eventually becoming a dual player with the club's adult teams. Murphy won back-to-back county championship medals in 2006 and 2007. Murphy made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Cork minor teams as a dual player in 2000. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1998 (known for sponsorship reasons as the Guinness Hurling Championship 1998) was the 112th staging of Ireland's premier hurling competition. Offaly won the championship, beating Kilkenny 2–16 to 1–13 in the final at Croke Park, Dublin. Format 1998 was the second year that the controversial "back door" or qualifier system was used in the All-Ireland Championship. While the two provincial final winners automatically qualify for the All-Ireland semi-finals the two defeated provincial teams join Galway and the Ulster provincial final winners in two "quarter-finals". The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1997 (known for sponsorship reasons as the Guinness Hurling Championship 1997) was the 111th staging of Ireland's premier hurling competition. Clare won the championship, beating Tipperary 0-20 to 2-13 in the final at Croke Park, Dublin. Pre-championship The 'back-door' system Since its inception in 1887 the championship had been played on a straight knock-out basis. If any team was defeated at any stage of the provincial or All-Ireland competitions it meant automatic elimination. Tony Considine
Tony Considine served as manager of the Clare senior hurling team from November 2006 until August 2007. Considine was ratified as the Clare hurling manager to succeed Anthony Daly in November 2006 at a county board meeting in Ennis. He had previously served as a selector on the Clare all-Ireland junior winning team of 1993 under Mike McNamara. At senior level, he was also part of Ger Loughnane's backroom team (along with McNamara) that guided Clare hurling through a successful period between 1995 and 1998. Frank Lohan
Frank Lohan (born 1974 in Shannon, County Clare) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his adopted club Oranmore/Maree, on the outskirts of Galway city, and was a member of the Clare senior inter-county team from 1995 until 2008. Playing career Frank Lohan won his first Munster Senior Hurling Championship in 1995, as Clare defeated Limerick 1-17 to 0-11 in the final. The team then went on to win the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, a victory that made Lohan and his teammates heroes in County Clare - it was the county team's first All-Ireland senior win since 1914.
