Alibi (1931 Film)
''Alibi'' is a 1931 British mystery film, mystery detective film directed by Leslie S. Hiscott and starring Austin Trevor, Franklin Dyall, and Elizabeth Allan. The film was adapted from the 1928 play ''Alibi (play), Alibi'' by Michael Morton (dramatist), Michael Morton which was in turn based on the 1926 Agatha Christie novel ''The Murder of Roger Ackroyd'' featuring her famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Austin Trevor once claimed he was cast as Poirot because he could speak with a French accent. It was the first of three Poirot adaptations made by Twickenham Film Studios in the 1930s, followed by ''Black Coffee (1931 film), Black Coffee'' the same year, and ''Lord Edgware Dies (1934 film), Lord Edgware Dies'' in 1934, all starring Trevor as Poirot. He later appeared in ''The Alphabet Murders'', a 1965 Christie film, playing a minor role. Black Coffee (1931 Film)
''Black Coffee'' is a play by the British crime-fiction author Agatha Christie (1890–1976) which was produced initially in 1930. The first piece that Christie wrote for the stage, it launched a successful second career for her as a playwright. In the play, a scientist discovers that someone in his household has stolen the formula for an explosive. The scientist calls Hercule Poirot to investigate, but is murdered just as Poirot arrives with Hastings and Inspector Japp. The successful play was adapted as a film in 1931. In 1998, 22 years after Christie's death, it was re-published in the United Kingdom and the United States in the form of a Black Coffee (novel), novel. The novelisation was undertaken by the Australian-born writer and classical music critic Charles Osborne (music writer), Charles Osborne, with the endorsement of the Christie estate. Harvey Braban
Harvey Braban (19 May 1883, in Brighton, Sussex, UK – 1943) was a British stage actor. He also appeared in films between 1920–1938. Braban performed regularly in West End plays, and also occasionally on Broadway. From 1920 he began appearing in silent films made by the leading British studios Stoll Pictures and the Ideal Film Company. Braban played the Chief Inspector in Alfred Hitchcock's '' Blackmail'' (1929) and thereafter often portrayed policemen or other official figures of authority on screen. One of his final roles was that of the Victorian Prime Minister Lord Salisbury in the 1938 film ''Sixty Glorious Years''. Mary Jerrold
Mary Jerrold (4 December 1877 – 3 March 1955) was an English actress. She was married to actor Hubert Harben, and mother of actress Joan Harben and celebrity chef Philip Harben. She made her London stage debut as Prudence Dering in ''Mary Pennington Spinster'' (1896); and played Martha Brewster for three and a half years in the original West End production of '' Arsenic and Old Lace'', opening in 1942. In 1922, in a stage production of Jane Austen's ''Pride and Prejudice'', Jerrold became one of the oldest actresses cast as Elizabeth Bennet, at age 44. In the play, she acted opposite her husband, cast as Mr. Collins. She appeared in Molly Keane's '' Ducks and Drakes'' in 1941. Ronald Ward (5 April 1901 – 31 March 1978) was a British actor who, alongside his stage work, appeared in more than twenty British films between 1931 and 1956. He was born in Eastbourne in 1901 as Ronald William Ward, and made his screen debut in the 1931 film ''Alibi''. One of his biggest roles was in the popular Vera Lynn vehicle ''We'll Meet Again'' (1943), where he was effectively the male lead (although he was billed fourth), co-starring with Lynn and Patricia Roc. His final marriage was to the actress Betty Baskcomb; and he was father of photographer Michael Ward.
