Da'i Al-Mutlaq
The term Da'i al-Mutlaq ( ar, الداعي المطلق, al-Dā'ī al-Mutlaq; pl. , ) literally meaning 'the absolute, or unrestricted, missionary', is the most senior spiritual rank and office in Tayyibi Isma'ilism. The Da'i al-Mutlaq has headed the Tayyibi community since the seclusion of the 21st Tayyibi Imam, at-Tayyib Abu'l-Qasim, traditionally placed in 528 AH/1134 AD. According to Tayyibi Isma'ili tradition, in the Imam's absence, the Da'i al-Mutlaq is the faith's highest authority; i.e., the Da'i al-Mutlaq holds the same authority as the Imam. Before the seclusion of al-Tayyib, the Da'i al-Mutlaq operated under the direct orders of the Imam and his trusted associates in regions where Isma'ili faithful were present, either living openly propounding their faith, or secretly due to fear of persecution. Tayyibi Isma'ilism
Tayyibi Isma'ilism is the only surviving sect of the Musta'li branch of Isma'ilism, the other being the extinct Hafizi branch. Followers of Tayyibi Isma'ilism are found in various Bohra communities: Dawoodi, Sulaymani, and Alavi. Al-Husayn Husam al-Din ibn Idris Imad al-Din () was the 21st Tayyibi Isma'ili '' Dāʿī al-Muṭlaq'' in Yemen. Life He succeeded his brother al-Hasan Badr al-Din II in 1512, and held the post until his death in 1527, when he was succeeded by his son Ali Shams al-Din III. Towards the end of his life Moulana's health became poor and all of the affairs of D`awat were entrusted to Syedi Hasan bin Nuh. Any correspondence received from Hind, Sind or Yemen was referred to Syedi Hasan bin Nuh and he would attend to it. Syedi Hasan bin Nuh was a native of Bharuch, a town in Gujarat, India. He was a prominent trader, distinguished scholar and had trade relations in Yemen and other Arab lands. He settled in Yemen in 1498 and became student of previous dai, al-Hasan Badr al-Din II. Muhammad Izz Al-Din I
Syedna Mohammad Ezzuddin () (died 1539 / 27th Safar, AH 946AH in Zabid -Yemen) was the 23rd Dai of the Dawoodi Bohra, a sub-sect of Isma'ili Shi'i Islam. The Dawoodi Bohra trace their belief system back to Yemen, where it evolved from the Fatimid Caliphate and where they were persecuted due to their differences from mainstream Sunni Islam and Zaydi Islam. Around 1567 CE, the Dawat (the sect's religious organisation) was relocated to Gujarat, India. Life He succeeded the 22nd Dai, Ali Shamshuddin, and conferred succession on Yusuf Najmuddin.
