Algeria and India maintain diplomatic relations. Algeria has an embassy in New Delhi, and India has an embassy in Algiers. History India supported the independence of Algeria from French colonial rule, and supported the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War (1954-62). The FLN had an office in India during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Diplomatic relations between Algeria and India were established in July 1962, the same month that the former gained independence from France. India and Algeria joined the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1961, and have been members ever since. There have been several high level visits by the leaders of the two countries. Since 1950, India has been hosting head of state or head of government, government of another country as the state guest of honour for Republic Day (India), Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. During 1950–1954, Republic Day celebrations were organised at different venues (like Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Irwin Amphitheatre, Rajpath, Kingsway, Red Fort and Ramlila Maidan). Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) is a form of permanent residency available to people of Indian origin and their spouses which allows them to live and work in India indefinitely. Despite its name, OCI status is not citizenship and does not grant the right to vote in Indian elections or hold public office. The Indian government can revoke OCI status in a wide variety of circumstances. As of 2020, there are 6 million holders of OCI cards among the Indian Overseas diaspora. The OCI scheme was introduced by The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2005 in response to demands for dual citizenship by the Indian diaspora.
