Alf O'Connor
Alfred William 'Alf' O'Connor (1900-1970) was an Australian rugby league player who played in the 1920s and 1930s. O'Connor was a state and national representative second-rower who won three NSWRFL premierships with South Sydney. Playing career Alf 'Itchy' O'Connor played eight seasons for South Sydney between 1922 and 1929. A tall second-row forward, O'Connor played 83 first grade games for Souths and played in four Grand Finals, and won three premierships with the club in 1925 , 1926 and 1929. O'Connor had an excellent representative career, representing New South Wales on nine separate occasions between 1924 and 1930. He also represented Australia on three occasions during the 1924 Ashes series. O'Connor is listed on the Australian Players Register as Kangaroo No.131. Mascot, New South Wales
Mascot is a suburb in the Inner-South of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Mascot is located 7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is one of the administrative centres of the Bayside Council. A small part of Mascot is located in the Inner West Council. Mascot is on the north-west side of Botany Bay and contains Sydney Airport. History The first land grants in the area were made in 1835, with market gardening being the main land use. Subdivision followed the construction of Botany Road in 1875 and a municipality known as North Botany was formed in 1888. A racecourse operated in this area in 1904 on land that was formerly owned by the Australian Golf Club. The race course was known as Ascot, named after its famous counterpart in England. Frank O'Connor (rugby League)
Francis Arthur O'Connor (1906-1964) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s and represented his state and country. He was a triple premiership winner with South Sydney. Playing career South Sydney O'Connor was a champion forward who played for South Sydney for ten seasons between 1927 and 1937. O'Connor was a member of the champion Souths teams of the late 1920s and 1930s. He partnered his older brother Alf O'Connor in the winning 1929 Grand Final team, and played in two more winning grand finals - the 1931 Grand Final and the 1932 Grand Final. Representative O'Connor was also a representative player for New South Wales, playing fifteen times for the Blues between 1930 and 1934. 1926 NSWRFL Season
The 1926 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the nineteenth season of Sydney’s top-level rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Nine teams from across the city contested during the season, which culminated in South Sydney’s victory over Sydney University in the premiership final. Season summary Rugby league had been going through a period of declining popularity. The “first past the post” method had resulted in a number of seasons where the premiership was decided before the end of scheduled matches, killing interest during the closing rounds. Falling crowd numbers led to the NSWRFL making a substantial loss in 1925, forcing changes to be made. For the 1926 season a finals series was introduced to maintain interest in the competition.
