Alexandre De Thy
Alexandre de Thy was a French Navy officer. He served in the War of American Independence. Biography Thy was born to an aristocratic family. He was cousin to Nicolas-Christiern de Thy de Milly. Thy joined the Navy as a Garde-Marine on 8 January 1751. He was promoted to ensign in 1755, and Lieutenant on 1 October 1764. He spent most of his career in the Eastern Mediterranean. In 1733, he was made a Knight in the Order of Saint Louis. On 13 March 1779, he was promoted to captain. He commanded the 74-gun ''Citoyen'' in the Squadron under De Grasse, and took part in the Battle of the Saintes, where he was wounded. He was acquitted in the subsequent inquiry into the battle. Garde-Marine
In France, under the Ancien Régime, the Gardes de la Marine (Guards of the Navy), or Gardes-Marine were young gentlemen undergoing training to be naval officers. The training program was established by Cardinal Richelieu in 1670 and lasted until Admiral de Castries abolished it in 1786. The Gardes-Marine received a brevet commission from the King and were organized into companies, established at the harbors of Brest, Toulon, and Rochefort. All naval officers were drawn from these companies, which were the equivalent of the current naval school. Order Of Saint Louis
The Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis (french: Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint-Louis) is a dynastic order of chivalry founded 5 April 1693 by King Louis XIV, named after Saint Louis (King Louis IX of France). It was intended as a reward for exceptional officers, notable as the first decoration that could be granted to non-nobles. By the authorities of the French Republic, it is considered a predecessor of the Legion of Honour, with which it shares the red ribbon (though the Legion of Honour is awarded to military personnel and civilians alike). 74-gun
The "seventy-four" was a type of two- decked sailing ship of the line, which nominally carried 74 guns. It was developed by the French navy in the 1740s, replacing earlier classes of 60- and 62-gun ships, as a larger complement to the recently-developed 64-gun ships. Impressed with the performance of several captured French seventy-fours, the British Royal Navy quickly adopted similar designs, classing them as third rates. The type then spread to the Spanish, Dutch, Danish and Russian navies. The design was considered a good balance between firepower and sailing qualities. Hundreds of seventy-fours were constructed, becoming the dominant form of ship-of-the-line. They remained the mainstay of most major fleets into the early 19th century. French Ship Citoyen (1764)
The ''Citoyen'' was a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, lead ship of her class to a design by Joseph-Louis Ollivier. She was funded by a ''don des vaisseaux'' donation from the Bankers and General Treasurers of the Army. Career Ordered in May 1757 as ''Cimeterre'', the ship was renamed ''Citoyen'' on 20 January 1762. A launching attempt aborted on 10 August 1764, when she came to a halt on the ramp, and she was eventually set afloat 17 days later. She took part in the Battle of Martinique on 17 April 1780 under Captain Poute de Nieuil. The Battle of the Saintes (known to the French as the Bataille de la Dominique), also known as the Battle of Dominica, was an important naval battle in the Caribbean between the British and the French that took place 9–12 April 1782. The British victory was considered their greatest over the French during the American Revolutionary War. The British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney defeated a French fleet under the Comte de Grasse, forcing the French and Spanish to abandon a planned invasion of Jamaica. Pierre-Louis François Buor de La Charoulière ( Vairé, 15 January 1735 — Les Sables-d'Olonne, 2 April 1803) was a French Navy officer. He notably served as major d'escadre of Guichen's squadron during the War of American Independence. Biography Buor was born to the family of Marie-Françoise Marchand de la Mulnière, and of François-André Buor de La Charoulière. Buor joined the Navy as a Garde-Marine on 6 August 1756. He served on ''Duc de Bourgogne'' in 1756, on ''Zéphyr'' in 1757, and later on ''Éveillé'', on which he took part in the Battle of Quiberon Bay on 20 November 1759.
